She and Adler were having a double wedding with Stacey and Tristan in May. Since Leila and Stacey have very small families, and mostly the same friends, it just made sense. The houses were on track to be completed and ready to be moved into by the end of May. They better be. The four of them were coming home from their honeymoons then and would need to live somewhere.

“Babe, come on.” Adler called and waved her down.

“Let’s not keep him waiting. I’m sure he has some surprises for Sylar and you.” Tom pulled her forward.

Leila laughed. She was sure Adler had planned many things he didn’t fill her in on. She joined Adler and Skylar who were sitting at a table at the front of the tent. Skylar already had her hands in some macaroni and cheese, with a mouth full of chicken.

“I got you a plate.” Adler pulled out a chair for her and kissed her softly.

Her heart skipped a beat. “Thank you. It looks delicious.” She commented as she wiped some cheese from Skylar’s face and placed her bib around her neck.

They ate and talked and laughed at the kids. It was a great afternoon surrounded by family and friends. Skylar got more toys than any one-year-old could ever use in ten lifetimes, and all she cared about was the boxes and bows. Grant helped decorate her hair with the bows from her packages until she was covered and there was nowhere left for anymore, so he started to decorate Elizabeth.

“Okay.” Adler stood and pulled out his phone.

“Who are you texting?” Leila asked.

He held up a finger, gesturing for her to wait a second. “Skylar has one more present.”

No way. “What did you do?” What else could he possibly give her? “She has enough.”

Adler grabbed her hand and pulled her out of her chair. The excitement on his face was contagious, but also a little overwhelming. “Nope. Every child who is a member of my family gets this on their first birthday. His smile filled his face as he picked up Skylar and turned Leila around.

Her mouth fell open. “Oh, my gosh. Adler.” Her heart stopped. There was a beautiful brown pony with a jet-black mane and jet-black tail being led toward them by Jonathon and Carla. It had pink ribbon braided throughout its mane and tied around its tail.

“Come on, Sky.” Adler almost ran to the pony with Skylar in his arms.

Skylar squealed as she reached out to pet the horse softly on its neck. “Ne, Ne.”

Adler laughed. “Yes, Skylar. A pony. All for you.”

This man was amazing. Leila wrapped her arms around Adler’s waist and laid her head on his shoulder as Jonathon took Skylar and held her on the pony’s back. Her heart swelled. “You’re too much, Warfield,” she whispered in his ear. Skylar’s face was total excitement as Jonathon lifted her from the pony and handed her to Liela.

“She’s so worth it.” Adler wrapped them both in his arms. He placed his head close to Skylar’s. “Happy birthday, Skylar. I love you so much.” He kissed her forehead and a tear fell down Leila’s face.

Adler wiped it away. “Hey, this is a happy day. No tears.”

“I know.” Leila laughed and sniffled. “I am happy. We are both so lucky to have you.”

“I’m the lucky one.” He placed a quick kiss on her lips. “I have one more present.”

She sighed. “Adler it’s already so much. You really. Need. To stop.”

He smiled his crooked smile that made her heart flip and winked. “This one’s important.” He turned. “Mom. Dad.”

Leila lifted a brow. What did Elisha and Don have to do with anything?

Don produced an envelope from his breast pocket and handed it to Adler. Elisha and Don both had weird grins on their faces, and when Leila turned to Adler, he was sweating and breathing rapidly. “Adler. What’s going on? What’s wrong.”

He shook his head and gazed intently into her eyes. “Leila, you two are my life. The first time I held you in my arms on the dance floor, and the first time I held Skylar at the fair, I fell in love. You both saved me and made me a better person. I love you both more than I ever thought it was possible to love anyone.”

Leila’s eyes went wide, and her heart thudded against her chest as his eyes filled with tears. “Adler.” Her voice came out as a whisper.

He took a deep shaky breath. “Leila, you and I are becoming one in May, but I hope we can become even more.”

“What?” She had no clue what he was talking about.

“I love Skylar like she’s mine. I know biologically she isn’t, but I see her as my daughter, and I couldn’t love her more. When we’re married, I want to adopt her and make her a Warfield also. I want her to know every day, that she was always loved and wanted by me.” He let out a heavy breath.
