Zane makes a trip back outside to unload the things he brought for the pup.

“You know you have to help me with him on the days I work twelves,” I say when he walks back through the door with his arms full.

He drops a dog bed on the floor, followed by a bowl, a bag of food, and a few small toys. The pup immediately grabs one of the balls and runs across the room to play.

“I was planning on it.”

Zane sits on the floor and starts playing with the golden Lab. “What are you going to call him?”

“What about Samson?” I say after a moment.

“That’s a solid name,” he murmurs, tugging on a rope with the little guy attached to the other side by his mouth. “I like it.” He glances up at me.

Zane’s chiseled face is glowing in the sunlit coming through the windows. He looks like a Greek god. I pause, reminded once again of how gorgeous he is as my eyes trail his features.

“I never thought I’d see the day the most eligible bachelor in Sullivan’s Way would be spending nights in my bed, in my house, here, in one of my favorite places in the world. I guess life is strange that way.”

He’s watching me with that quiet intensity of his. “Strange but good.”

“Strange … but great,” I agree.

Zane pulls me into his lap. I wrap my arms around his body. He feels solid beneath my hold. And warm. He feels like mine.

We play with Samson for a while, and then I finish dinner preparations. About forty-five minutes later, everyone starts arriving.

And as I look around my dining table at the faces of my new friends and found family in my house in this vacation mountain town, I’m reminded that, sometimes, the best things can grow out of the worst situations.
