“And then we can nest to get started on producing our heirs.” I haven’t forgotten that Rose and I were deprived of our nesting time. Days, even weeks, where we are consumed by each other without any interruptions.

“What’s nesting?”

I smile wickedly. “I’ll tell you all about it later.” I don’t feel like talking anymore. I want to get lost in Rose, so I kiss her.

My queen is home at last.

Epilogue

The Guardian

The first match proves fruitful, just as I expected it to be. Rose and Malix are what the mortals call star-crossed lovers. I sensed it immediately after meeting with them both, and although I hadn’t been sure their love and devotion to one another would be enough to stop the Nephilim, I held on to hope.

Which paid off.

However, one match doesn’t win wars, nor does it forgive me for the sins of my past. Maybe nothing will, but I’ll chase the feeling of redemption for as long as it takes.

This is my fault after all.

I plagued my home, hurt people who trusted me, and sacrificed things that were never mine to begin with.

Immortality is truly a curse that allows endless possibilities for corruption and greed to take over. I had thought I would be the exception, but my arrogance couldn’t be contained until it was too late.

Now I am destined to fix the mistakes of my past, or risk losing the one being whom I love above all else. If I want her back, I need to succeed. If I don’t, I will lose everything that I have ever held dear. Mescos and my mate.

Guardians can’t survive without their mate.

Funny how I once relished in the title of Guardian. Yes, people still call me that, but they don’t know what I did. They don’t know that I’m no longer worthy of such an honorable title.

But she was. She’s always been. This prestigious position was what she dreamed of doing ever since she was a little girl. We took the trials together, fought together, and became the fiercest guardians the academy produced.

I had everything. My mate. Immortality. A family.

But it hadn’t been enough for me and now I’m paying the ultimate price.

My body aches, growing weaker by the day. My powers and abilities will continue to wane until I fix what I broke.

To add insult to injury, I can’t fight these creatures. No, it would be too easy that way. The Divine Beings never make anything easy. I have to find mortals to do the work that I cannot. If more die because of me, well, that’s just another name to add to the never-ending list.

The last few matches haven’t worked. Maybe I’m losing my touch, but I remain positive that I found the right one this time. Tortured souls call out for other tortured souls.

Right on cue, as if summoned by my melancholic thoughts, a door slams, followed by hurried footsteps. They grow closer and closer until they reach my door. I wait.

This is typically the time where most of my matches leave because they no longer want to go through with it. Who could blame them? I know firsthand what it feels like being ripped away from your family, even if it was your doing. The feeling is haunting and all-consuming.

I wait with bated breath. I don’t know what I will do if this woman walks away. From everything I have observed after our first interaction, she’s the perfect match for the alpha wolf.

Just when I think the match will turn and leave my porch, she knocks.

I let out a sigh, body sagging in relief. With one last glance around the room, I answer my door and meet the future Luna of the Alpha pack.
