“Yeah?”

“Definitely. I just don’t know if it can happen in December.”

“I’m probably going to defer graduation anyway.”

“Why?”

“I talked to my advisor, and he suggested I do it. If I graduate in December, something about it may be causing problems with me playing. I don’t know. He said it should be fine, but I’m here for free, so why not? I’m thinking I’ll just take four total blow-off classes or something next semester, really focus on the team, and maybe we get back to the spot where we were last year. I’ll graduate in May.”

“So, you want that graduation present in May, then?”

“No, I want it now. But we can’t have it now,” she replied.

“Shay?”

“Yeah?”

“I’ve liked you for a long time. You should probably know that now since we’re clearly talking about taking things to another level here.”

“You have?” Shay asked, surprised. “How long is a long time?”

“Since we met, really.”

“You mean, freshman year?”

“I thought it was a crush. But it wasn’t. Or, it’s not now, at least.”

“You had a crush on me?” Shay smiled and couldn’t believe what she was hearing.

“Yes. But don’t make a big deal out of it. It’s really embarrassing.”

“No, it’s not. Tell me.”

“You’re really pretty, obviously.”

Shay giggled and said, “Yeah?”

“And I thought you could be funny.”

“Could be?”

“Sometimes, yeah.”

“And you liked me?”

“Yes,” Layne confirmed.

“Why did you date all those other girls, then?”

“All those–” Layne shifted until she was on her side like Shay and said, “It was, like, three girls.”

“So why didn’t you ask me out instead of them, if you liked me?”

“Because you’re… you. You were, I don’t know, out of my league or something. Plus, we were on the same team. But, yeah, I liked you a little.”

“Oh, a little. Suddenly, it’s a little?” Shay laughed.

“It’s a lot now, if that makes any difference.”
