“I don’t really know how.”

“I’m sure you can figure it out. I get turned on by you when you’re wearing a mask and baggy sweats.”

Layne laughed and said, “Um… Okay. We can maybe try sometime.”

“Sometime?”

“Yeah, sometime.”

“Tonight?” Shay asked.

“Tonight?” Layne asked in that same high-pitched voice of Shay’s that had her laughing before.

“Or not,” Shay replied.

“I’d like to, but I have homework, and a lot of it. Maybe not tomorrow night? Because I have a presentation that I have to get ready with a group. We have a Zoom meeting. Maybe–”

“Babe?”

“Yeah?”

“Why don’t we just not plan anything and let it happen if and when it happens, okay?” Shay suggested.

“Okay,” Layne replied. “I could use some preparation time anyway.”

“Preparation time?”

“To learn how to–”

“Nope.” Shay squeezed her hand again and said, “No preparation. Don’t look anything up. Just be yourself. And I’ll be myself. Okay?”

Layne nodded. Then, she noticed a car.

“Shit. Coach. We need to go.”

“Fuck,” Shay muttered, let go of Layne’s hand, and stood up.

Layne stood, too, and grabbed her bag. Quickly, they spread out on the sidewalk, with Layne walking more in the grass than on the walk itself, and they watched as their coach drove past them with a little wave, apparently not having caught them in the act.

“I hated that,” Shay said.

“What?”

“Having to let go.”

“Me too,” she agreed.

CHAPTER 25

Shay: What are you wearing right now?

Layne: The same sweats I had on earlier. Why?

Shay laughed to herself and typed another message.

Shay: What do you have on under the sweats, babe?

Layne: Oh. Now?
