Shay wasn’t sure what she was holding on for. It wasn’t like she had anywhere to be. She couldn’t go be with her sick girlfriend right now.

Hilton: Sorry, I was checking the shower schedule. Jessop said something to Roy yesterday on the bus to the game, and I overheard it.

Shay: What?

Hilton: Jessop let her boyfriend sneak into the bathroom with her a few days ago, and they showered together, I think. At least, that’s what I overheard her telling Roy. She missed him or something, and he’s not an athlete here, so he doesn’t have the same rules we do. Maybe he had it or something. Layne has her showers scheduled after Jessop’s, according to the schedule we’re all supposed to use, at least, so if she sticks to that… I don’t know. Just an idea.

Shay seethed. It was absolutely possible that Hilton was wrong and that Jessop, who had already gone through COVID once, hadn’t been the reason her girlfriend currently had it again. Still, Jessop had broken the team rules and had risked not only everyone on the basketball team but also everyone who used that bathroom and everyone who walked the halls in this building.

Shay: I need to go. Talk later.

Shay found Jessop’s number in her phone and dialed.

“Hey, Shay. What’s up?” Jessop greeted.

“Did you let your boyfriend into the building?”

“What are you talking about?”

“Jessop, did you?”

“Who told you? Roy?”

“That doesn’t matter. Did you?”

“Yes, but we just showered together. Then, he left. We hadn’t been able to see each other in weeks, and we missed each other. We thought a shower would be the safest thing, you know?”

“Jessop, that is in violation of I don’t even know how many rules,” Shay replied.

“I know, but–”

“No. Layne is sick.”

“I know. Coach said.”

“You had it, Jessop.”

“What?”

“You had COVID last year.”

“I know that.”

“How stupid are you?” Shay asked and rubbed her other hand over her face. “Layne showers after you. Did you know that?”

“No, I don’t really pay attention to when other players shower, Shay.” Jessop laughed a little.

“Stop joking around and pay attention.”

“Fine.”

“Layne showers after you. She never leaves her room. Trust me, I’d know. The only place she could’ve caught this is that bathroom, and you had someone in there with you who doesn’t have to follow the same rules we do.”

“I hadn’t had sex with my boyfriend since the beginning of the season. Sorry, Shay. I made him stay home from work for a couple of days before, and he’s only gone to virtual classes.”

“Work? What does he do?”

“Delivers food for an app.”
