“He’s not your client. There’s nothing ethically wrong with what you’re doing. But he probably needs to find another sponsor. Someone with an unbiased view. Someone who hasn’t seen him naked.” She smiled. “What else is bugging you about this?”

“He moved in with me. He was living with his brother, who is out of control. Alcoholic, drug addict, and sex addict just like him, only he refuses to get clean and is extremely toxic to Michael. His parole officer is giving us a chance. If things don’t work out, he has to go to a halfway house.”

“How are you handling it? I don’t want you to relapse from the stress of it all.”

“I love him being there. I feel safe. I’ve never had a man make me feel like this.”

“Sexually, how is it going?”

Haize felt herself blush again. “It’s healthy.”

“Healthy? As in?” Janet motioned her hands for her to elaborate.

“As in, we do a lot of things I’d never imagine with anyone else. I’m not ashamed to be naked with him. He’s fantastic at oral sex. I can’t say no to anything he wants to try, because he’s so damn good at everything he does to me.” She thought about him fingering her ass. Did he have anal sex on his mind? It would be scary and likely hurt, but she’d do it for him. She’d do anything for him. Janet didn’t need to know that detail.

“That’s good. Likely because he’s very experienced, being a sex addict. Just be careful. You seem very happy with him but be careful.”

She recalled all the times they’d made love without a condom, and she hadn’t gone to the clinic to get on birth control yet. They’d been so lost in each other, so passionate, that neither took the time to stop themselves to put one on. Not to mention how fantastic it felt without that thin barrier, as well as how seductive it was to feel his seed fill her up.

“We haven’t been really careful in the contraceptive aspect.”

“Are you careful about STDs and pregnancy?”

“He’s clean. He was tested upon release. As for pregnancy, it’s been…” She smoothed her hand down her hair. “We haven’t been careful at all.”

“When’s the last time you had sex?”

“This morning.”

“Go get the Plan B. As soon as you leave my office. He’s early in his recovery. The last thing you two need right now is a surprise pregnancy. And if you don’t want to get on birth control, make him wear a condom. Every time.”

Haize felt like she was being scolded, but Janet was right. He was taking on too many things and already had a son he had his mind on. A baby would make it far more complicated than it already was. Along with Mitch’s situation, it was a relapse waiting to happen, and she would do anything she could to prevent it, even if it meant contraceptives and being more careful in bed.

Haize got home around 4:30, around the time she said she would. She looked flustered as she set a shopping bag down on the table and pulled a small box from it. She slid it toward Michael and sat across from him, staring at him as he looked it over.

“What’s this?”

“It’s Plan B.”

“Plan B?” He arched his eyebrow. “Isn’t that what they call the morning-after pill?”

“Yeah.”

“Is there a reason you got it?” He recalled Marilyn buying them a few times when they were so high, they couldn’t remember things, but he didn’t know a whole lot about it.

She tucked her hair behind her ear and took it from him, sliding the single dose from the box. “We haven’t been very careful, Mikey. And I’m not mad. Please don’t think that, but the last thing we need right now is me getting pregnant.”

She was right. They hadn’t worn a condom in a while, and he loved finishing inside of her. It was just too hard, lost in passion and the pleasure he got when they were both on the brink. It was far better than any high from a drug and impossible to stop himself.

“Yeah, my pull-out game is pretty weak.” He forced a smile, trying to lighten the mood. “How much did that cost you?”

“It’s not cheap.”

“I’ll give you some money since it’s my fault.”

“Are you kidding me?” She popped the pill from the foil and put it in her mouth, sipping some water. “It takes two to make a baby, Mikey, and I’ve told you over and over again not to stop. It’ll be fine. I’ll make an appointment at the clinic to get on birth control since we’re enjoying no barrier between us a little too much.”

“How was work?”
