“By the way, woman, my stall, does it have to be so near the front?” Celt whined as I walked to the door.

A laugh escaped me.

“Yeah, Celt. We want the visitors to see Hellfire is really supporting the fundraising. Which means no hiding in the background. All of you are in the front rows.”

Celt’s groan followed me as I left the room.

Chance

“Don’t recognise him,” Chance stated, studying the image on his phone. “Has anyone else seen him?”

“Thalia and Tati. They were shopping when Tati noticed him showing a lot of attention to Thalia. At first, Tati said he seemed confused when he was watching her, but when he realised Tati had clocked him, he fled. Thalia has also seen him when she was picking something up for Bear. She claimed he was driving an expensive silver sedan, but she couldn’t see what make. She knew it was a new model, though,” Big Al explained.

“So, he seems to be monitoring Thalia and Clio? No other old ladies?” Chance asked.

“Think this is something to do with their money?” Sunny inquired.

“No idea, but I got a bad feeling,” Chance replied, frowning as he studied the man.

As far as Chance could see, he was a suit. Not someone related to the Fangs. The guy was about his forties with styled hair, and he wore what was clearly an expensive shirt and slacks. Chance knew somewhere there was a suit jacket that matched. There was something off about his demeanour as he hid and watched the comings and goings.

“Sunny, run facial recognition,” Chance ordered.

“On it. This event is in three days. Clio is not gonna let you lock her down,” Sunny pointed out.

“No, damn it. I’ll put the prospects on her. And it’s time we voted those fuckers in or out. Bone, Wraith, Slaughter, and Smokey have done their time. Bear, schedule a meeting for two days. All brothers to attend; we’ll have the vote then. We keep putting it off, which ain’t fair to them. They’ve proved their worth,” Chance replied.

“Fanatic?” Bear asked.

“Think he is ready?” Chance demanded.

“He’s got another year. He needs to fulfil it,” Sunny stated, and Chance turned to him.

“Why? Fanatic’s nearly done his time as candidate and then prospect,” Bear snapped.

“Because this war is coming soon. As a brother, Fanatic will be on the front lines. As a pros, we can have him in the background. Sorry, ain’t saying Fanatic’s life is more valuable than anyone else’s, but Fanatic on the front line will make Phoe flip. And be honest, Chance and Drake will both be distracted if he’s upfront with the rest of us,” Sunny pointed out.

Chance nodded slowly. That was true. Chance’s reactions had been raw when he’d seen Fanatic pinned down by rubble.

“He is going to guess,” Chance muttered.

“So give him a task. He needs to find four or five prospects to take his place. And we all know quality prospects aren’t easy to come by. Tell him that’s his final task. Let Fanatic start stepping up to a brother’s role a bit more but by promoting the other four. Most of the prospect stuff will fall on Fanatic,” Sunny suggested.

“That ain’t a bad idea,” Bear mused, chewing it over.

“Will keep the hot-headed little prick under control,” Chance agreed.

Ever since the bombing, Fanatic’s temper had developed, and he was more than ready to throw a punch nowadays. Being pinned and helpless, facing death, had done a number on Chance’s easy-going nephew. Fanatic now hit the gym with Tiny five times a week, building up muscle mass. He’d join in when the brothers would take to the ring and was well on his way to holding his own. Fanatic’s good nature had faded, and harder edges had grown. The boy had disappeared, and a determined man had taken his place.

“Okay, we’ll put that to him. But if that fuck comes up with four or five candidates, we can’t hold him back. And knowing that little shit, he will surprise all of us,” Chance finally declared.

“Honestly, it wouldn’t surprise me if Fanatic has someone in mind already. I know Rage has Aurora, but that kid has an uncanny ability to pre-empt most of our stuff.” Bear chuckled.

“Which is what makes him a fuckin’ good prospect, and he’ll be a damn fine brother,” Sunny agreed.

“I’ll call Fanatic in for a meeting before Thanksgiving. We’ll give those who win the votes their cuts then, but I want Fanatic to understand why he ain’t getting him,” Chance said.

“He is a prospect, Chance, we do not owe him shit,” Sunny disagreed.
