That one word hit her like a brick to the back of the head. Inhaling sharply, she closed her eyes, fighting back the stinging sensation that came with the thought.

The tension in the air told her Shane felt it, too, but he didn’t say anything. A minute later, he was turning off the light and climbing into bed beside her. She turned away from him, giving him her back. Lying there stiff, she tried to shut her brain off.

It didn’t work.

The more she tried to stop thinking, the more the thoughts filled her head.

She thought about her family. What had they felt in their last minutes? She hoped they hadn’t felt any pain and prayed they had died quickly.

Shane said his family had texted him. When she had arrived home, she had put her phone on the charger and headed outside to the garden. What if her family had tried to text her? What if she had kept her phone on her and had been able to get help to them quicker? What if…

She tossed from one side to another, the what-ifs and survivor’s guilt crashing over her. She rolled again and found a heavy arm tossed over her.

“Lie still and go to sleep. We have a long day tomorrow.”

Hmph. Like he could just order her to sleep, and it would work.

Her mind turned from her family to the handsome man lying next to her. Sure, he was sexy as hell, but he was dominating and came from a family that didn’t take no for an answer—a family like hers—and who had no qualm killing those who crossed them. She had sworn she would never marry into that world.

When she got married, she would marry someone calm, quiet, and respectful—not one of the alpha male assholes she’d grown up around. A kind accountant, maybe—not the son of another powerful mafia family.

“Francesca, I said lie still.” His arm was back over her, and this time, a leg draped over hers as well.

He thought she was going to marry him—fat chance—his promise to his parents be damned.

She pushed his arm off, and it was harder than she thought it would be. Damn thing was much too heavy.

“What’s going on, little girl?”

“I can’t sleep. My mind won’t shut off.”

“What helps you sleep normally?”

“My Kindle. I don’t have it, and I have nothing else to distract me.”

“I understand. Let me help get your mind off of things.” He rubbed her back and moved his hand up her shirt.

“No. I’ll go to sleep.” She rolled away from him, an action met by his fingers digging into her hips as he slapped her ass three times hard in succession before he rolled her back.

“You will not avoid my touch. Not now, not ever. You are to be my wife. I will own your body, and you’ll find that to be quite pleasurable.”

“You will never own me.”

“Never say never.”

“God! You are impossible.”

His only response was a chuckle. His hand still on her left hip, he slipped his right hand under her shirt, and her breath caught in her throat.

“Be a good girl and listen to me. Don’t think about it, just feel. If you can do that, I promise I’ll turn your brain off and put you to sleep,” Shane growled.

CHAPTER 6

Shane

Shane cupped her breast as he lowered his mouth and took the taut tip inside, suckling, then grazed his teeth over it, biting down. A guttural moan escaped from the back of her throat, egging him on. Blood rushing to his cock, he shifted on the bed into a more comfortable position.

Down boy.
