PREVIEW

PHANTOM: VETERANS OF VALHALLA

Prologue

The crunching of tires along the gravel alerted Phantom to the arrival of his guests. With no small amount of anxiety swirling in his stomach, he pushed himself up from his couch, grabbed the heavy cane, and hobbled outside to the porch. The handsome couple spilled out of the truck, looking around in awe.

He knew the feeling well.

Every morning he watched the sun rise over the mountains, sometimes while trying to get a run in, other times while sitting on the porch in his rocking chair.

“Hudson, this place,” the beautiful woman, his best friend’s wife, Brianna, swept her hand to indicate the vast surrounding as she finished saying, “is breathtaking.”

“Now, I know you are a world traveler,” Hudson teased. “After all, we saved you from attack in the Congo. Surely, you’ve seen prettier.”

“No, I haven’t, really! The Rocky Mountains are,” seemingly at a loss for words, she looked at her husband for help. Max merely shrugged.

“I’ve always been a fan. How are you brother?” Clearing the distance between them, Max capped Hudson on the back.

“Good. Much better now with you here.”

“I can’t wait to hear about the progress you have made.” Max’s words hinted at more than the development of the ranch.

Hudson chose to focus the conversation on Valhalla, not wanting to discuss his own physical process.

“I was blown away by the number of applications sent in. There are more of us out there than I thought. Why don’t we head inside, and I will tell you about it?”

Once they were settled into the large living room with cups of coffee in everyone’s hands, he told them about the newest settlers to Valhalla Ranch. Situated in Western Colorado, the twenty-five thousand deeded acreage had several buildings on it. The property was a mixture of working ranch and corporate retreat before Hudson purchased it. After a series of wildfires ravished the Colorado landscape and a worldwide pandemic closed down travel and put a stop to group retreats, the owner defaulted on several mortgage payments and instead of facing foreclosure, decided to sell at a loss.

Hudson, forced to medically retire from the Navy due to injuries sustained in combat, found himself with nothing but time and an unbelievable inheritance his grandfather left behind for him. The mountains beckoned to him, and he followed them home. Once there, he did a lot of soul searching. He found the next chapter of his life, starting new on Valhalla. He wanted to set up a place that would give a second chance to veterans like himself—special forces operators who recently separated from the military and weren’t ready for full on integration into thecivilian world. He also desired a way to give back to the military community. Especially the wounded warriors.
