Her eyes drop and she sighs heavily.

“I’ll call my grandfather. He will call the dogs off.”

“No.”

“No?”

She faces me with fire in her eyes and I smirk, “Iwill call your grandfather.”

“Why?”

“Because it is respectful.”

“Whatever.” She turns away and I can tell she is hating this. Her reality has entered fantasy, and she is fighting against it.

I lift the phone and Gleb says, “Don Vieri for you, sir.”

The next voice I hear is one that reeks of power.

“Alexei, it appears you have something of mine.”

“Good afternoon, Don Vieri.”

Serena looks up with burning emotion in her eyes as she hears her grandfather’s name.

“Sir, with respect, we have a problem.”

“We have a problem?”He laughs softly.“I accept that you have a problem, Mr. Romanov, but I fail to see how that affects my organization.”

I take my seat and prepare to deliver the news.

“There was a paid assassin on Serena’s flight, one I recognized having used her services myself. We must face the possibility she was there for your granddaughter.”

“Impossible.”He says in a rough whisper.“Serena’s safety is my top priority, and nobody was aware she was traveling.”

I take a deep breath. “I hope you’re right, sir. My brother is waiting for the assassin and will soon discover the identity of her target. In the meantime, I wanted to assure you that Serena is safe, and no harm will come to her under my protection.”

“Your protection.”He laughs softly.“We both understand the outcome of any harm coming to my granddaughter, Mr Romanov, but I appreciate your respect. Now, let me speak to her.”

I look up and hold out the receiver and the resignation in her eyes makes me hate her life.

She takes the phone and says smoothly, “Nonno.”

I watch as she listens, a little of the fight leaving her, and then she stares at me with tears sparkling in her eyes and says softly, “I understand. Thank you.”

She hands the phone back to me and I say, “Don Vieri.”

His voice is laden with dark intent as he says huskily,“My granddaughter is my heart, Mr. Romanov. Don’t break it.”

He cuts the call, leaving me in no doubt of his intentions if anything happens to her and I sigh, replacing the phone and staring at her with concern.

“Are you okay?”

“I’m fine.”

She takes a deep breath and fixes a smile on her face and says lightly.

“Now show me your room, Alexei, and make it a visit I won’t ever forget.”
