He appears amused.

“Of course.”

I take a deep breath.

“I want to be able to leave at any time.”

“Naturally.”

I’m feeling empowered and push my luck.

“I want to invite my friends around sometimes.”

“No.” He shrugs as I frown. “You are free to meet your friends. Of course you are, but not in my family home. In case it’s escaped your notice, it’s not just me who lives there, so if you want to entertain your friends, it will be in my penthouse in the city.”

His reply has knocked me sideways. He has a penthouse. Of course, he does, and I can’t wait to check it out on a girly night with my closest friends who will definitely not believe it when I invite them there.

“Why don’t you live there?”

I’m interested and then surprised when a soft expression changes the business-like one and he says simply, “I prefer to live with my family.”

“The two women who were at the table?” Even in my emotional state, I registered the elegant woman and the extremely attractive one who appeared strangely familiar.

“My mom and sister, who you already met.”

His eyes light with mischief and the blood drains from my face when I remember exactly where I met his sister.

“That was your sister? Oh my God, what must she think of me?”

“Pity, I expect.” He says nonchalantly and I groan.

“Great, your sister pities me for being the sad basket case I obviously am.”

“No.” He grins. “For having to put up with my shit.”

I stare at him in astonishment because this man is different to the one I’ve been figuring out for the past few days. I like this one a lot more and breathe a sigh of relief that he has a personality in there somewhere. It will make this appointment a lot easier to deal with.

“So, the penthouse.” I really can’t wait to see it and as if he reads minds, Troy says as an aside, “It’s not far from here. We can check it out on the way home if you like.”

I nod enthusiastically because this day just gets better and better. Maserati’s, penthouses and a wicked proposal that I am still getting my head around.

Our meal arrives, and I attempt to pretend that I have eaten in places like this a million times before. I love how well the food is presented and the flavors are out of this world. Troy is studying my reaction and I say as I place my knife and fork together, “Do you eat like this all the time?”

“Yes.” He says simply and I don’t miss the heated gaze he is throwing my way that is doing strange things to my heart.

To disguise how much it affects me, I glance around the room.

“Do you know anyone else here?”

He nods. “A few. I do business with most of them and there are a couple of people I recognize from the golf club.”

“I didn’t have you down as a golfer?”

I’m surprised because he seems more about work than playing.

“It’s where a lot of business deals take place. Why wouldn’t I take advantage of that while caring for my mental and physical health at the same time?”

“What are your hobbies?” I’m intrigued to know more about him.
