“The usual. I work out at the gym, play golf and tennis, and attend the theater.”

“Anything else?” I’m intrigued and his eyes sparkle as he leans forward and whispers, “I enjoy sex.”

I swear my face bursts into flames because just the thought of it with a man like him is too much of a fantasy to ignore and I doubt I’ll get much sleep tonight as I picture what that could mean in the privacy of my own bed.

“Yeah, me too.”

I wish I could tear out my own tongue because why the fuck did my mouth run away with itself like that? My brain is fucking furious, and the way Troy’s eyes darken and spear darts of wicked intent straight to my lady parts, has me crossing my legs under the table and reaching for the water.

I’m almost tempted to pour it over my head to put out the flames and luckily, I am spared his reply as the waiter arrives with our main course.

Despite the fact I hated the sound of it, the venison is seriously good, and I am spared conversation as I tuck in and occupy my mouth in a far less troublesome way.

By the end of it I have already forgotten what we were talking about and say with delight, “I’m glad I asked you to choose for me. I wouldn’t have picked that, and it was amazing.”

He grins. “Then perhaps you will follow my lead in all aspects of our relationship.”

“Perhaps.” I raise my glass of wine to him in a toast and say casually, “If we agree on my terms, that is.”

“You have more?” He arches his brow and I nod, the alcohol and rich food dulling my senses. “What about, um, boyfriends and girlfriends, for that matter?”

“What about them?”

“What if I want to go on a date?”

“I will be your date.”

“Okay.” I bite my lip. “But what if…” I really don’t know where I’m going with this, and I’m surprised when his hand reaches for mine and he laces our fingers together.

“I will give you anything you ask for, Laura, just be the best accessory on my arm and I will reward you.”

Accessory!

For some reason, that word blows the evening apart and I snatch my hand away and say tightly. “Of course. That’s what I will be.”

I picture my immediate future as some kind of designer Barbie doll being plucked from the box and played with when it suits him. I will be prettied up and then put back on the shelf when he’s tired of playing.

I understand what this is and while it would suit a lot of women, it’s not my dream come true but what other option is there? I need this experience so I can hide away from my shitty life.

For a few months, I can ignore who I am while I process the devastating truth about my birth. I realize Troy is using me for some kind of revenge against my unknown family, andI don’t give a shit about that. I may even help him, but above everything, I just want to bury my head in the sand and reinvent Laura Kincaid into someone I can live with in the future.

Now the rules are set in place I’m not bothered about making any others. If he wants a doll to play with, then I’ll use him too. He’s a good-looking man with the personality of the devil, and I could learn a lot from him about letting go of emotion and allowing my head to rule my heart.

He is staring at me with an enigmatic expression and disguising his thoughts well, so I face him with a blank look of my own and extend my hand.

“We have a deal. When do I start?”

As he takes my hand in his, he replies with a wicked grin. “You already have.”

CHAPTER 32

TROY

Ialways knew she would agree. Why wouldn’t she? I’m offering her the opportunity of a lifetime and it’s all for the greater good. The Vieris will hate her being under my control. They realize I’m a loose cannon and the man behind the attempt to extricate them from the society that allows us to thrive. When I spill their dirty little secret at the next meeting, the votes will undoubtedly be cast, expelling them from our club.

I understand why it was set up in the first place and I must give Don Vieri credit for that. However, its members include various politicians who can’t be seen to mix with criminals. It’s tarnishing our reputation and needs to be dealt with and the only way to fight men like the Vieris is to play them at their own game.

Laura will be my weapon when I make my intentions clear. I will publicly shame and ridicule her when I expose the sordid nature of her creation and how her own family tried to hide her away. I will reveal that they murdered the men in cold blood who were responsible and removed her own mother from the equation when she lost her mind.
