I reach down and pull her up to sit on my lap and wrap my arms around her.

“It’s okay, baby. You’re not on your own anymore.”

I plant soft kisses on her face and stroke her hair as she clings to me as if she’s fearful I’ll leave, like a small child who won’t let go. My heart is full of overprotectiveness and love for her because I have never met a braver woman in my life.

She was going through all of that and still raised a smile and made me fall in love with her. As revenge plot goes, this one backfired big time because now if she turned and walked awayfrom me, I would be the broken man they find bleeding his heart out on the floor.

We must sitfor several hours just kissing and talking it through. There are no secrets between us, and I am happy to learn the identity of her dining companion but unhappy knowing another man was the one responsible for telling her something I knew all the time.

My phone rings and sounds even louder within the walls of her closet and I note Max’s name lighting up the display and I answer it quickly.

“Max.”

Laura stares at me with a grim expression that mirrors my own as the air in the room becomes tense.

“She boarded a private jet registered to Constantine Holdings.”

“Fuck!” I run my fingers through my hair and stare at Laura in desperate helplessness.

“Where did they land?”

“Sicily.”

My heart sinks. I knew it.

Max continues.“I did some digging and learned they were picked up by a motorboat and taken to an island called Serenita.”

“They?” I hope like hell Max has got a name for me and he doesn’t disappoint.

“Apollo Constantine. Son of Dimitri Constantine, head of a Greek mafia family who are close friends with the Vieri mafia.”

I was expecting this, but it doesn’t make the shock any easier to deal with and it must show on my face because Laura says quickly, “What?”

I shake my head and say roughly, “Keep digging. I want to know the movements of every fucking member of the Vieri family.”

Max says confidently.“Leave it with me.”

I cut the call and stare at Laura with a furious desperation.

“It appears that your family has mine.”

“Melissa?” Laura’s eyes are wide as I nod.

“They obviously don’t take kindly to anyone interfering in their business and this is the price I must pay.”

“What are you going to do?” Her voice shakes and I take a deep breath and say as calmly as possible.

“I’m going to sort this shit out.”

“I’ll help you.” she says quickly, and it melts my frozen heart.

I cross the room and take her into my arms and whisper, “You can help me by staying safe. I don’t want to involve you in this.”

“But I am involved, and I want to help.” She says earnestly and I love how good that is to hear.

“Please, Laura. Let me deal with this and when I return, we will work out where we go from here.”

“What do you mean?” Her eyes are wide as she pulls back and stares at me and I hate the fear in her eyes as she senses everything will change.
