The first door leads to an executive bathroom, and I stare in awe at the gold taps and luxurious hand towels stacked neatly under the basin. The air is heavily perfumed and smells amazing and I catch sight of my reflection staring back at me with confused awe.

My heart is going into overdrive because it’s ten past ten and I should have already collected the empty coffee cup, not just be delivering it.

Frantically, I try every door, but most of them lead to small offices. One is a walk-in closet and another a shower room. The final door must be the one and yet when I open it, I blink in confusion because who the fuck has an actual bedroom at theoffice with a freaking king-sized bed in it? There must be some mistake and I back out of that room as if the carpet is a bed of hot coals.

Where the fuck is the kitchen?

This is a disaster and yet before I can even think about the shit I’m in, an irritated growl behind me makes me jump.

“I’m still waiting, Laura.”

His breath is hot on my neck, and I turn quickly, only to find him so close I instinctively back away, straight into a wall and as I cower against it, he shakes his head and points to the elevator.

“There’s a Starbucks just off reception. My order will be waiting. Remember, I like it hot, so you may want them to do it again.”

I nod, any words sticking in my throat, my mind calculating exactly how long I have to get that stupid coffee back up here and still be hot enough to burn this bastard’s tongue off.

He steps to the side and points to the elevator.

“Not a good start, Laura. Do better.”

Then he turns and walks away with the arrogant swagger of a man who obviously likes everything his own way.

CHAPTER 6

TROY

Ireturn to my office with an irritated sigh. I’m not sure I really thought this through because revenge is one thing, but business is another and taking on an inexperienced pa may make my own job more difficult.

Violet was a good assistant to a point, but her obvious infatuation began to irritate the shit out of me and caused me to be even more belligerent than usual. Now I’m stuck with a woman who knows shit and I’m seriously second guessing my decision. At least Violet always had my coffee on my desk at the exact time. My diary was always up to date and any instructions I gave her were carried out on time and to the standard I prefer.

I sit at my desk and stare at my diary, noting the usual meetings scheduled with my managers who oversee the day to day running of my empire.

Remington Industries is a machine that works efficiently because of the systems I have put in place. My father almost bankrupted the company, and it’s taken a lot of hard work to bring it back from the brink. My reward is a blue-chip company that is rising and standing taller than many of our competitors, and it is largely due to my involvement with The Dark Lords.

As I think of the organization Laura’s grandfather founded, the determination returns to my mission. The club consists of many influential men and women in all areas of life, and we work together to get the job done. A mutually beneficial secret society that serves its members well, however, having the mafia seated at the head of it is always a risk because if anyone steps out of line, the consequences are deadly.

I know I’m taking a chance messing with the Vieris. Don Vieri himself is a ruthless bastard who takes no shit and his grandsons are no different, which is inconvenient. Their father would have been easier to dispose of because he was a greedy bastard who suffered his fate at the hands of his own blood.

Yes, I need to tread carefully, and they must never discover my sinister plot to remove them from our lives.

I note my cell phone illuminate before it rings.

“Maxwell.”

“Sir.”

My private investigator is bang on time as always and I wonder what he has for me today.

“Don Vieri has returned to his private island and his son, Killian, is away on a business strip to Sicily.”

“And Shade Vieri?”

“Is currently on vacation in Bali with Allegra Powell.”

“Anything else?”

“I ‘dated’ the intern at the Vieri’s lawyers and managed to get eyes on the last will and testament of Giselle Matasso.”
