He stands, and the sun turns into thick, dark clouds. A fat droplet of rain falls from the sky. The beach melts away, and I’m left sitting on a stone floor in a dark, empty room. There’s no rain anymore, just nothingness, and panic rises in my chest. I can’t breathe.

And then there is the faintest sound. Voices. It’s like they’re coming from another room but so quietly that they must either be far away or whispering.

I clamber to my feet and grope my way forward, searching for the wall connecting me with wherever those people are. But it’s pitch-black, and I have to move slowly.

With every step, the voices grow louder until I can make out a few words. Then my palms touch stone. I rest my ear against the wall.

“…can’t seriously have feelings for the necromancer? She’s a Belvedere,” says a young woman’s voice. It has to be Anastasia.

“I never said I had feelings for her.”

My heart skips a beat. That’s Cyrus, and he sounds annoyed. His voice is clipped and raised. Perhaps he’s offended by the notion that he ever had feelings for me.

Fuckboi, I say loudly in my head.

“What the…” Cyrus mutters.

Did he hear me?

“What’s wrong?” asks an older woman. Lavinia. “You seem distracted.”

“Nothing,” Cyrus says.

“The connection between you and the necromancer is closed, isn’t it?” asks Anastasia.

“Of course it is,” Cyrus snaps. “I would have told you if it wasn’t.” He sighs. “Look, we need to be careful. We have enemies everywhere.”

“And we’re not at full power,” Lavinia adds.

“Speak for yourself.” Anastasia sounds almost bored. “I’m quite capable of taking on a few witches.”

“Ana, don’t do anything rash,” Cyrus says. “I don’t want to clean up your messes once again. I’ve had quite enough of that for one lifetime, let alone two.”

Anastasia makes a scoffing sound, and the three of them go quiet.

“He’s right, Ana,” Lavinia says. “My beautiful girl and my handsome boy. I never thought I would see either of you again. And now that we’re reunited, we can’t do anything to jeopardise that.”

Get out of here, comes the voice in my head.

Cyrus knows I’m here. He knows I’m listening in.

I can’t believe you tricked me like this, I say.I can’t believe what you did to me!

His voice sounds pained when he replies,Kira, you know nothing. You have no idea what is going on, and I want to keep it that way. It isn’t safe to be here. Nowget out!

The force that propels me away hits me like a strong gust of wind. I’m expelled from the dark room so fast that it knocks me onto my backside. I’m on the beach again, but this time, Cyrus is nowhere to be seen. Then I’m back in my bed, and Laila is still snoring.

What the hell was that? And where are Cyrus and his family?

Forty-Six

Two students are dead, and one is missing. Three vampires exist in a world where there should be none. And somehow, I’m in the middle of all this. All I was supposed to do was learn a few spells, keep my head down, and eventually graduate to become a Guardian. Instead, I’m caught in a web of potentially deadly lies.

I feel like I’m in a daze. Even getting dressed for school seems odd, like the world is off kilter and I don’t know why. Somewhere deep inside my brain, I’m pushing my way through a barrier that will take me to another place, another realm or plane of existence. My mind wants to go back to that strange, dark room where I can hear Cyrus and his family talking. About me.

A necromancer. A Belvedere.Anastasia Dracul used my powers and my name against me. Perhaps it’s taboo for a vampire and a necromancer to be together for some reason, though I’m not sure why, because as far as I’m aware, vampires aren’t undead.

“We’re with Apollo this morning,” Laila says, nodding at my skirt and blazer. “You might want to change into sweats.”
