Page 24 of Hitting the Boss

“Everyone says you are the same as you were. They just haven’t figured out who you are fucking,” I said.

Cal stopped and looked at me. His eyes were hard. “They’re wrong.”

I shook my head. “Guess you need to do better at proving them right.”

“Jessica has blocked all of my suggestions. And all the marketing the firm is doing isn’t hitting the younger generations. They’re missing social media.”

“Well, they’re plotting against you. Do you know anything about Kate?”

His eyes narrowed as his gaze drifted away from me. “I should probably look into that. Why are you telling me this?”

“Why shouldn’t I? Just cause I don’t want to get fired for screwing the boss, doesn’t mean I don’t care. I know how much this means to you,” I said.

“Just leave,” he growled.

“Fine. I didn’t want to be here anyways,” I said as I grabbed my boxes of food. Slamming the door, I stormed out of the office, my footsteps echoing angrily down the hallway. I stuffed my food in the break room fridge. Everything was going wrong. I needed to do better at avoiding him.

Chapter 13

Cal

Go to hell.

That’s what today’s note said. Did I deserve it? I don’t think so. Maybe this was coming from a deeper place of hurt. Maybe she had seen something in me like I did for her. I sighed as I threw it into the drawer with all the others. My fingers traced over the older ones. It’s funny how something deep inside me told me to keep those nicer notes, when in reality, they were from Jordan. The time she was sitting in front of her dryer waiting for her clothes to dry, she was missing my introduction to the company. How did it take us this long to know we worked at the same place?

I studied the coffee. Was Jordan the type of person to spit in it? I know she was still mad at me. I shrugged. Gotta take some risks sometimes. I took a sip and started to walk down the hall. She wasn’t at her desk and her iced coffee was melting on the corner. I walked over to her computer which was still on. An email was opened from T. Lyons asking for Jordan to see him. Itook note of the office number in the signature and went to find her.

After I left the elevator, I walked the corridor that led to his office. Having an office meant he had to be higher up in the company. The others worked in cubicles or the open-space layout. I knew Jordan mentioned doing a little bit of everything but something in my gut told me that I needed to find her.

When I arrived at his office, the door was open. I slowly walked up to the door. Mr. Lyons was leaning against his desk as he was watching Jordan pick up scattered papers off the floor. Mr. Lyons had black hair peppered with gray. He was wearing an ill-fitting suit, some of his shirt buttons struggling to keep his stomach contained. The bottom of his pants were wrinkled. His cheeks were covered in red splotches and he had a creepy smile plastered on his face. Jordan’s position on the floor revealed the luscious curve of her breasts from the cut of her top. Jordan’s jaw was clenched as she stared daggers into the ground.

“Sorry, my dear,” he said. His voice was cold as the lie left his lips. My fists were clenched as I watched this man leer at her.

Jordan sucked in a breath. In a controlled manner, she muttered, “Accidents happen. Funny how they always happen near you.”

“Funny is the right word.”

My eyes narrowed. Did this guy do this often? The tension in this room was heavy as she finished pulling up the last few papers. I cleared my throat. Her eyes flicked to the door. Some of the tension eased in her body. Whatever was happening, she wanted someone else here, even if it was me. The person I thought she hated with all her body. But no, that person seemed to be Mr. Lyons at the moment. Mr. Lyons turned toward me. A fake smile spread across his face.

“Oh, Caleb? What are you doing here?”

I leaned against the doorway and shrugged. “I needed to talk about my coffee order with Ms. Jordan,” I said casually as I waved toward her.

Jordan stood up and walked toward me. She stepped right in front of me. She tilted her head up. “Oh, I hope it was alright, sir,”she said. Her eyes were filled with a mischievous glint. A soft smile spread across her lips.Thatsmile was for me.

“She gets you coffee? Maybe I need to get in on this, too. I would love to have Jordan serve me daily,” Mr. Lyons said.

Why did this jerk have to talk? At least, Jordan was happy to see me again. Like she used to be. Whatever confidence Jordan had mere seconds ago evaporated at those words. Her shoulders dropped as she clutched the papers even more.

I smiled gently. “Go into the hall and we’ll talk more,” I said.

Jordan nodded. I stepped inside the office and shut the door. I leaned against the door. I crossed my arms. “Do you do it often?”

His head tilted and his eyes narrowed. “What do you mean?”

“I mean, are you getting her in compromising positions for you to ogle her?”

Anger flashed in his eyes as he turned to walk behind his desk. “I don’t know what you are talking about, Caleb. Nothing untoward happened here.”
