“I am!”

“One reason I was watching, though, is in my room. The door is next to you. There is a present on the bed for you. You can wear it tomorrow night.”

“You shouldn’t be getting me anything,” I said as I opened the door. On the bed was a slender box. I picked it up and opened the box. Inside was a sparkly necklace. “Cal, this is too much.”

“How is it too much when you ordered two pairs of shoes?” he said.

I felt some blood drain from my face. Ididorder two pairs of shoes. And I almost put some boots in the cart, too. “Well, tennis shoes are more practical and I will get more use out of them,” I said. “You’re lucky I didn’t add the boots.”

“I would love to see you in some boots, wearing some of those skirts you wear around the office. The image of you bent over my desk again wearing some boots. Actually, order them later.”

“Pfft. Is there a camera in here?”

“Yes.”

“Are you watching me?” I asked.

“Yes.”

The camera was in the corner. I flipped my middle finger at the camera as I closed the jewelry box. “I should probably give this back to Brian.”

Cal chuckled in my ear. “He’ll be fine. Probably booted up his laptop already. Lost to the code.”

“Do you want me to get lunch or coffee while I am out?”

“Yes. I sent them a to-go order for you to pick up for us,” he said.

“Us.”

“You know, I want there to be an ‘us.’” My heart leaped at that comment. Once upon a time, that’s what I wanted, too.

“You know we can’t.”

“Just according to you,” he said.

“Bye, Cal.”

“Bye, Jordan.” I hung up and sighed.

Chapter 20

Jordan

The door swung open as I approached the doors. I looked up and realized it was Alana. I waved although my arm was weighed down with the bags and the coffee. She glanced at the bags.

“Wow. He sent youtherefor lunch?” she asked. She reached forward and grabbed a bag from me.

I shrugged. “Even rich guys gotta eat.”

“I see two coffees,” she said.

“Yeah, he’s gotta pay for the juice, ya know. He knows. So he’s ordered me some stuff, too. I work best fed.”

Alana smirked. “Looks like you got lots of benefits from this change.”

“I dunno about that.” I wasn’t going to tell her about the constant “be my girlfriend” comments.

Her face changed. I waved my hand.
