Kate waved her arms. “Nothing he does covers anything her position touches.”

“Had to be screwing her. Someone should alert HR.”

I frowned and my anger rose. They weren’t listening to me at all. “I’ve been there every day. There was no meeting with a Paula. There hasn’t beenanysuspicious activity in his office. No one comes down there unless it’s intentional.”

“I’m telling Human Resources this week,” Jessica said.

I sighed. “Nothing happened.”

Jessica turned with her mouth opening up when there was a loud clap in the front of the room. The instructor introduced themselves as they explained the class. I stepped to the top of my mat as I waited for further instruction. We moved through the poses. Occasionally, I would teeter and Kate would titter in giggles. Midway through, Kate stood up and walked to our bags.

“I’m going to take a picture!” She bent over and I saw her grabmyphone on top ofmybag.

“That’s mine, Kate.”

Kate straightened up really quick as she dropped my phone back. A fake smile on her face. “Oh, oops. My bad. We must have the same type of phone.”

I steeled my jaw. She was lying. She sentmeto buy her the latest phone. My phone was two generations old. There was no way she could confuse the two. She grabbed her phone and snapped a picture.

“I wasn’t ready. I wasn’t smiling.” No, I was probably angrily looking at the camera.

Kate shrugged. “You looked fine.” As she dropped her phone again, she walked back to her mat. I huffed as I tried to catch up with the current poses. Kate leaned closer to Jessica and started to whisper in her ear. What were they planning? I continued to follow the movements as they whispered. As the class wrapped up, they bounced up and walked to the bar. Jessica smiled at me and waved me over. I grabbed my phone first. I didn’t want Kate to try to grab it again.

I grabbed my courtesy mimosa. This wasn’t a drink I would normally drink. I tried to hold back a flinch as I sipped it. Kate and Jessica chatted amiably about their spin class. It was the same spin class I had to schedule for Kate every week. I sighed as I swirled my drink. Why did I come here? Did I owe Cal that much to suffer like this?

Myotherphone rang from my purse. I got up and walked to my bag. It was Brian. I hit answer. Kate looked at me from the side of her eye as I put the phone to my ear.

“What?”

“I need you to get Cal. There’s a paper I need filled out tonight and he’s not answering my call.”

“Do I get paid this much?” I said.

He laughed. “Please can you somehow get a hold of Cal? I’m emailing you the signing link that I need filled out right now.”

“Fine. I guess I will go then.”

“You are a lifesaver.”

“You better not forget that.” I hung up and grabbed my stuff. I walked back to the bar.

I looked at Kate and Jessica. “I’ve got to go.”

“What was that? Why do you have two phones?” she asked with narrowed eyes.

I shrugged. “Maybe one phone is a wifi-only phone and I keep one for pictures or music? I will see you at work on Monday.”

Jessica nodded. “See you then.” As I turned, I saw her lean toward Kate. I knew they would be whispering about me as I left and unease settled in the base of my stomach.

Chapter 32

Cal

Iwalked out of the elevator and paused. Jordan was sitting on the floor in front of the door. Probably should give her a key. She already has the key to my heart. She just doesn’t know it. Her head popped up from her phone as she stumbled up. She was wearing tight leggings and a form-fitting tank. What I would do to her if she’d let me . . .

“Were you in the park practicing again?” I asked as I motioned at her outfit.

She blinked. A small smile lit up her face. “Oh, no, not today. I wish. I guess I did team building with Kate and Jessica. I told myself yoga would be cross-training and make me better in the end.”
