I made a face as I tried to hide my grin. “It was really hot, though.”

She giggled. There was a pounding on the door. “Who could that be?” she asked.

I rolled my eyes. “Probably Cal.”

I opened the door and sure enough, there he was. I turned toward Jaime. “See? Stalker.”

He stepped past me. “Who’s this?”

“She’s Brian’s VA.”

“I thought it was a guy named James.”

Jaime made a face. “My dad was weird. Pfft.”

“Why her?” he asked.

“I don’t think a male assistant would matter much. He has a boyfriend. She’s the best. Anyway, I think she would be the best at the job. Are you doubting me? Cause I’m working on getting drunk and I’m not in the mood to be trifled with.”

Cal turned back to me. “That shouldn’t have happened back there.”

“Why do you say that?”

“You realize there was a clause that if there was a form filled out, it wouldn’t be a problem. I filled that out the moment I realized it was you since we had a previous relationship.”

My hands went to my hips. “You never told me that. Shouldn’t I have to fill one out too? Sounds risky. They should have thought about that better.”

He slid fingers through his hair. “You never asked. Did you know about the policy?”

I pursed my lips. “I actually didn’t know about that policy. So you’re telling me Alana has known for a while?”

“I sent it to her confidentially. So, maybe. I don’t think she looked at it at first.”

My shoulders slumped as I sighed. “They’ve been planning that since you came along, though. Not me. I was a suitable target. Kate already hated me.”

“I tried to protect you. They set us up.”

“Except you still have a job.” I pointed my spoon at him and then dug it into the ice cream. “What about Brian’s company? You weren’t paying me yet. Right? Now we have to work on the legal pay things for that company because I need a check sooner than later.”

I waved at him while looking at Jaime. “I told you. Idiots.”

“I can fix it all,” Cal said.

“Or I’m fixing it all. Right? Cause I’m the assistant.”

Cal pursed his lips. He looked at Jaime. “You were going to tell her all the things while drunk?”

“You betcha.”

“And that was going to work.”

“You betcha.”

He rolled his eyes. “What now?”

“I’m about to blast Brian’s phone and beg him to come here because I need a full-time job. I have rent to pay.”

“You’ll get enough money to pay for your place. Or you can move in with me.”
