I laughed. “Only if we get everyone on the same page,” I said.

“I told Brian to tell Cal how he truly feels. He’s been really stressed out lately. He hates not being able to work.”

“How has that been going for you?”

“Great. He does message me at random times. I’ve figured it out. I have to remind him to do people things.”

“So you’rehisbabysitter.” I laughed.

She shrugged. “Been there, done that. He’s pretty nice, though.”

“What do you mean?”

“I took care of my grandparents for a few years. Iwastheir caregiver, but sometimes they were mean. It’s so hard when the disease takes their personality and leaves . . .” She paused and took in a breath. “He’s nice, mostly. Although I have gotten grumpy at the three A.M. texts.”

“Shit. Sorry about that. I don’t know him that well.”

“It’s fine. I’m trying to convince him to come here, but he said he won’t be second fiddle,” she replied.

I hummed as I sipped my drink. “What if Cal doesn’t choose me?” I whispered.

“Oh. Do you really think he won’t?” she asked. “He looked sad when you told him to leave.”

“That’s really the first time I’ve actuallyreallymade my thoughts known. You know that . . . no but it’s really a yes.”

Jaime giggled. “Yeah, yeah. Blurred lines.”

“You should be thankful you are single.”

“Yeah, yeah,” she said with an eye roll.

“Don’t let Brian take control of the situation or whatever.”

“I can put him in his place.”

“Yeah, don’t be like me. Complicating love with the workplace.”

She looked off into the distance. “Have you ever had someone you lost the chance of ever being with?”

“No. I just choose shit guys to date most of the time.”

Jaime laughed. “Same. Same. Mistakes were made.”

“God, we suck. Look at what I’ve done with my life the last few weeks.”

Pity crossed her face before she laughed lightly. “Hey now. I’m taking a break from that.”

“Oh, really?”

“Yeah, I said I would be single after my last breakup. Closedallmy sites after an unpleasant incident.”

“What happened? If you don’t mind sharing? I mean, you saw mine explode in my face.”

She made a face as she stirred her ice coffee. “It was a scene gone wrong. Later on, I found out he was . . . not a good guy. So I told myself to just get out. Nothing. I make bad choices; I’m not to be trusted.”

“Ah, I hope it’s okay.”

“I’m fine. Working on getting my life together and getting out of all the holes my life is in. My vibrator is doing a lot of work these days.”
