“Are you going to be okay?”

A weary laugh escaped her lips as she shrugged her shoulders. “Would you let me be anything but?”

“Nope,” Bash cut in. “Whatever is going on, we’re going to handle it and make it better than okay. Now let’s go. I call backseat privileges.”

A real smile graced Summer’s face as she let Bash lead her out, my omega whispering things in her ear to keep that smile firmly in place. They looked so damn good together, each soft in their own way yet incredibly stubborn and resilient.

It was easy to picture them together. The heat on my neck rose as I thought of all the things I wanted to see, and wanted to do to them. Bash had come so hard the last time we were together as I told him all about my little fantasies.

Of course, I wanted the opportunity to court her just as I had Bash. I was a bit old-fashioned that way and she deserved it.

Dad held his hand out for the keys, and I was in no mood to argue, grateful that I could depend on him as I always had.

By the time we’d made it back to her place, after swinging by the pharmacy so she could fill the meds the doctor had prescribed her, I was about to lose it and demand to know what happened, even if I knew that was an entirely shitty way of handling it. I wanted to support Summer, not push her away.

I opened the car door for her, the smile she gave me softening some of the worried edges that were grating on me.

“Soon,” she promised, giving my shoulder a squeeze as she passed me and headed inside with Bash.

Dad put an arm around my shoulders and pulled me in for a hug. It didn’t matter if I was two or twenty-four. He always gave the best ones.

“I don’t like this,” I admitted, squeezing him back.

“I don’t either,” he agreed. “But no matter what it is, we'll figure it out together. All we can do now is go in there and make sure she has what she needs.”

Not wanting to spend another minute apart from my omegas–and yes, that’s exactly what they were, even if she hadn’t acknowledged it yet–I hurried inside relieved to find a smiling Summer. She was standing in the living room looking over what appeared to be a massive castle constructed out of legos.

“Miles made a drawbridge!” Theo was telling her excitedly, showing her how the piece lowered and closed.

Leave it to our beta to have impressive design skills.

“That’s so cool, buddy. It looks like you had a blast!” Summer said, squeezing Theo tight.

“Dad is awesome,” Theo said seriously. “He stays and we always play.”

Theo squirmed out of Summer’s arms and plopped down into a seat right in Cole’s lap, my pack mate beaming as if he’d just been given the greatest gift in the entire world.

“You guys really went all out,” Summer said, looking around the setup. “He’s not going to want to have Old Ms. Krieger watch him anymore.”

“She was watching him?” Cole asked.

“Just for a few hours when I needed to concentrate on a major client project,” she said. “I don’t like working at night, and it isn’t always the easiest to multitask with this bundle of energy.”

“Next time, call us?” Cole asked. “Any time we can spend with him, we’d love it.”

The fact that he usedweand notmemade me admire my packmate all the more.

“Okay,” Summer said softly. “Thanks for staying with him.”

“Let’s get you both settled and fed, and then we can have that talk,” I said, my alpha instincts kicking in.

Just then, her stomach rumbled, which had Cole, Dad, and myself growling in response.

Theo was still wrapped around Cole, but he gave us a demanding look. Even without that it wouldn’t have stopped me from sweeping her up in my arms and plopping her on top of Bash’s lap for safe keeping while Dad and I went to wrestle up some food.

Aiming for quickness, we ended up making a couple of the boxes of mac and cheese we’d found in the cupboard and sauteing some of the chicken that was in the fridge. It wasn’t gourmet by any means, but it had protein and comfort and would get the job done for both of them, which was the most important part.

Dad cut up Theo’s chicken in small bite-sized pieces and put his plate in the freezer for a minute while I arranged Summer and Bash’s.
