“But that still doesn’t answer how you got with Russo.”

Moment of truth. She couldn’t explain her desperation that fateful night without mentioning Portia. The whole reason shecalled Frank and involved him in her mess was to keep Portia safe and out of the system.

Nick let Cheryl tell her story and surprisingly it matched Frank’s almost to the letter. He figured there would be some variables on how each perceived the relationship, but even the timeline matched. It seemed she sensed the same ounce of compassion in Frank that Nick experienced when he retold the story. The man was definitely an enigma with many different layers.

Her past seemed to exhaust Cheryl, but if they were to have anything real in the future he had to ask about her child, especially now since she was considering divorce.

“There’s something else—” A sharp knock on the entry door silenced Cheryl.

Nick eased off the bed and pulled on his pants. “Stay here, I’ll get rid of whoever it is.”

“Shit, you look like hell.” Jax barged past Nick and entered the foyer. “What the fuck? Were you sleeping?”

“No, I ahhh—What are you doin’ here?” Nick scrubbed his hand over his jaw.

“The club got broke into. Samson’s been calling you for the last hour. When he couldn’t get you he sent me.” Jax paused. “They trashed all the liquor in the storeroom.”

“Fuck!” Nick dragged his hand through his hair. “Who?”

“Don’t know but they had to be professionals to get past our security system.”

“Fuckin’ thing is supposed to be state-of-the-art and somebody cracks the code.”

“Samson wants you down there.”

“Yeah, yeah, let me get dressed.”

“Nick is everything all—” Cheryl stood in the archway. “Oh.” She tightened the bed sheet around her body.

Nick shifted his glance between Cheryl and Jax.

“I’ll go get dressed.” Cheryl turned, then disappeared down the hallway.

Jax leaned in and stage whispered. “What the fuck are you doin’?”

“None of your business.” Nick rubbed the back of his neck.

“Right. So, I won’t mention you’re up here bangin’ Johnny Russo’s WIFE, or Frank Barnett’s DAUGHTER.” Jax threw up his hands. “I don’t know which is fuckin’ worse.”

“Let it go.” Nick didn’t need the reminder of his latest screwed up situation. He drew in a deep breath hoping to calm the anger boiling in his gut.

“Plus, every time you get involved with that bitch your life turns to shit.”

“Watch your mouth,” Nick warned.

“Tell me I’m wrong. Tell me from the first time you got with her in New York things didn’t go south. It wasn’t until you got away from her that shit turned around.”

Nick silently assessed Jax’s words.

“Even you can’t deny it cause you know I’m right.”

“You’re not right, but I think we got bigger problems than who I’m sleeping with.”

“Did you ever think maybe what happened is because of who you’re fuckin’?”

“I told you to watch your mouth.” Nick glared at Jax. “And she had nothing to do with what happened at the club.”
