So shewasdoing something.

They stood glaring at each other, and he wanted to throttle her, but at the same time scoop her up and take her home.

Bella Montgomery felt like she belonged to him, which made no fucking sense whatsoever. He wasn’t walking out of here without her. So she could stand here and fight for as long as she wanted.

Hell, maybe she was just looking for a decent guy to date and thought her brother might have contacts. Fair enough.

So why had she refused him last night?

Because you offered her second helpings of sex, not a date, douchebag.

“You’re here to find a husband.”

Her cheeks deepened. “God, Blake. You make it sound like I’m a leper. Maybe I just don’t like dating apps.”

Blake lifted his brows.

“Bella, you are a gorgeous woman. A rich, gorgeous woman,” he declared. “Knox is scaring half the men away, not helping you. He looks like he would rather rip out his molars than see you go home with any man in this room. Including me.”

“Especially you,” she muttered.

“What?” Blake frowned.

Bella shook her head.

“Start talking or I’ll go out there and tell Knox you’re mine tonight and make him an offer.”

“Blake, please.” She gasped. “Don’t you dare.”

“So this isn’t about money? Not at all,” he questioned, leaning toward believing her.

“No.” Bella shook her head. “Well yes. Not the way you think. The opposite. I just can’t explain.”

The opposite?

Color me even more intrigued.

“Well, if you think I’m letting you leave with any of them, sweetheart, you are wrong.” Blake ripped an hors d'oeuvres off the tray as the server passed and popped it into his mouth. He’d barely eaten all night, finding himself obsessed with this beautiful siren.

“Last night was more than I...Blake?”

Oh shit.

“Fuck,” his mouth fell open, and a wafer dropped to the floor.

“Blake!” she gasped.

“Fuck. Jacob!” he yelled, clawing his throat, and spitting out the crab. “Get my brother. Jacob. Now!”

Bella stared as he leaned on the table, then dropped to the ground, knowing what was coming next.

“Call an ambulance. Shellfish,” Blake croaked, gasping.

“Jacob!” Bella screamed. “Logan! Help!”

Fuck.

He hadn’t seen it. He’d been so distracted he hadn’t paid attention to what was under the stupid piece of cucumber.
