She must have asked why he wasn’t.

“Because he was closest, and it doesn’t fucking matter. We just need him...sorry...ducking matter. Right. Okay. No, stay at home. He will be okay.”

“I’m Emma.” The beautiful woman smiled across from her.

“Bella,” she replied, then fumbled with her purse, wondering how to explain her reaction. “Montgomery. Friend of Blake’s.”

Jacob stared at her. “He’ll probably be in here a couple of days recovering. Why don’t you go home and visit him tomorrow?”

“No.” Bella shook her head.

She wasn’t going to explain herself. Leaving felt wrong. If something happened...she’d already lost people from her life. She and Blake had things left unsaid.

Unresolvedsomethings.

Or maybe she felt responsible for Blake tossing the hors d'oeuvre into his mouth.

If she had just said yes to going home with him...

Why did he want her? She’d seen all the beautiful women hoping to catch his attention tonight. A flush of arousal shot through her despite the inappropriateness of it. Blake had shown signs of possessiveness since meeting her.

And in bed, holy smokes, she’d been under his spell.

Her phone rang, snapping her back to the present. She glanced around the waiting room and quietly answered. “Hey.”

“Bella, Jesus. Did you go to the hospital with the Dufort’s?” Knox asked.

She nodded, then realized he couldn’t see her.

It had been two hours, and she was tired. Which was why she was standing. While sitting, she’d nearly nodded off and her neck had a crook in it.

“I just need to make sure he’s okay,” Bella replied.

“His hospitalization is already in the media. Make sure you aren’t seen by any of them,” Knox noted.

Ah, the joys of having powerful brothers. They forgot she was a grown woman who could take care of herself. She walked to a seat, slumping into it. She might have asked for his help, but he had no right telling her what to do.

“No one knows who I am. You and Ward are the faces of the organization, not me, Knox. I’ll call you tomorrow.” Bella hung up.

Then ignored the next two texts which came through.

Boundaries were important.

A little while later, Logan and Emma walked out. Bella stood and they headed over to her.

“He’s fine,” Logan said. “Groggy. Jacob is staying with him.”

“If you want a ride home, you can come with us,” Emma suggested, laying a hand on her arm.

They were being so nice, given they didn’t really know who she was.

“Can I see him?” Bella glanced at the desk and the woman gave her a grumpy look. Stupidly, she’d admitted she wasn’t family and was told to stay put.

“Babe. Help her out,” Emma said to her husband and boy, those puppy dog eyes would melt any man.

As if on cue, Logan sighed and walked over to the desk.

Emma winked at her. “Works every time.”
