Jacob straightened his pants and adjusted his tux. She assumed because he might be photographed.

“Just another day in the life of a Dufort.” Bella smiled as Jacob winked, then patted her shoulder as he walked past. “Don’t stay long. That nurse does not look forgiving.”

“Hands off my girl.” Blake growled.

Bella let out a little laugh, then her smile faded as the door closed behind her. Blake was watching her, his tired eyes still filled with licks of desire and dominance.

“I have your jacket,” she mentioned, walking closer.

“Keep it,” he said and swallowed.

“Are you okay? I’m so sorry—”

“Don’t,” His voice croaked as he lifted his hand.

Bella went to him, standing beside his head and taking his hand.

“God, I was so scared. Your family must think I’m insane jumping in their car. But what if—”

“I didn’t,” he said firmly. “Fucking seafood.”

Bella nodded, knowing he was keeping his sentences short to save his throat. She just stood there as their fingers entwined, his heat radiating through her body. Calming her.

When she let out a sigh and her body slumped, he tugged her arm, and she sat on the bed. He tugged once more.

“I should go. You need to sleep,” Bella whispered.

“Lie down with me,” Blake instructed. “Fuck the nurse.”

She let out a little laugh, tossing her bag on the chair and stretching out alongside his hard body.

“Okay, for five minutes,” Bella agreed.

But it wasn’t five minutes, and she didn’t know what Logan had said to the nurse, but she woke up five hours later with her head on Blake’s chest and his free arm wrapped around her.

Damn.

Her plan to find a husband had just taken a slight detour.

It was hard to ignore the feeling of being exactly where she wanted to be and breathed in all of him, knowing this would be their last moment together.

It had to be.

Bella moved her head ever so slightly and gazed at Blake, taking in his perfect square jaw, long dark lashes, and thick curly hair. Listening to his slightly crackly breathing. Feeling the pressure of his arm as if even in sleep, he wasn’t letting her go.

And it made her wonder.

Wonder if Knox was wrong about the Dufort’s being too wealthy and if she was wrong about Blake.

And if he she might be bold enough to put aside her shame and ask...if he was interested in a business agreement where he got to spend not just one more night with her, but two years.

It was a long shot.

And a risky one.

Maybe too big a risk.

Bella nuzzled back into his chest.
