She did not want his rejection. Cain leaving her was bad enough. Perhaps she should stick to the plan.

CHAPTER THIRTEEN

Three days later, Blakewas back in the office feeling like his usual self. Thank fuck he hadn’t needed intubation, and after a bunch of fluid, antihistamines, and some other drugs, the reaction to the seafood had been controlled.

Hallelujah, he’d been able to keep breathing.

Always useful.

Waking up with a beautiful woman lying on top of him was not horrible either.

“Told you that you’d spend the night with me,” Blake had rasped, smirking.

“The lengths you were willing to go to are commendable.” Bella had smiled shyly as she rubbed her eyes.

“Never underestimate a Dufort.” He grinned.

God, he’d loved seeing his jacket wrapped around her. Like a dog wanting to mark a lamppost, Blake found himself wanting Bella to wear more of his stupid clothes.

He couldn’t believe he was contemplating a relationship with a woman. It had to happen eventually, he guessed, and Bella was an incredible woman. She was not at all what he’d thought she was when he first collided with her at the museum.

Except he hadn’t seen her for three days, and Blake was already desperate to have her in his arms again.

That’s right, desperate.

Jacob and his mom had brought over dinner last night, and that had been an interesting conversation.

In fact, he’d call it odd.

“I should have come to the hospital,” Samantha Dufort expressed, hugging him as she walked in.

“Mom, I was fine. Logan and Jacob were there,” Blake asserted. “It’s happened before, and I’m sure it will happen again.”

Not that he was planning it, but statistically, it was highly likely.

“I’ll never forget the first time you reacted to seafood. You were three. I thought you were going to die. It’s terrifying as a mother to see your child gasping for breath and basically dying in front of you.”
