He liked her.

He liked her a whole damn lot.

But he wanted to date, not commit his life to her.

“I’m an art history major, not a businesswoman. I need someone smart who can help me learn how to lead an organization or to hire the right person. I have every intention of removing Randall from the organization.”

“You think I’m smart?” He smirked.

“Fishing for compliments much?” Bella toed him in the leg.

“I much prefer the ones you offer when you are flat on your back.”

“Focus, Blake.” She blushed. “Okay, so you know my mom met Ward, and while they never married, they had three children together. My half brothers. You met Knox.”

“Plus Levi and Atlas,” Blake inserted.

Bella nodded and yawned. “Yes. They were each gifted some Kennedy shares when she died, but I received the majority.”

“What do they think about what you are planning to do?”

“Only Knox knows. Ward, Levi, and Atlas think I’m going to sell. After...” Bella’s cheeks warmed again, and Blake watched as she chewed her bottom lip.

“Why do you keep doing that?” he asked, reaching to brush his hand over her cheek.

“What?”

“Keep looking embarrassed. There’s no reason to be ashamed. I’m sorry for reacting the way I did. Hopefully, you can understand why, given my hatred for the man.”

She nodded. “I know. You must think...”

“I must think?” he prompted.

Bella rubbed her forehead. “How many women have to negotiate to get a man to marry them?”

“That’s not what this is...well, it is, but—”

“And there was someone. Once,” Bella blurts out.

What? Who?

Blake stiffened.

Every time he imagined this woman with another man, it sent him back hundreds of years to the mentality of a damn caveman. His chest swelled, and he wanted to pick up a stick and start stabbing.

Up until this point in his life, he’d considered himself a reasonably stable person.

Perhaps he’d been wrong.

Until Bella Montgomery. Fuck,Scott.

“Cain. We were together for years. In love,” Bella divulged.

“Where is Cain now?” Blake asked.

“I thought he was going to propose. He never knew about my trust or who I was. But suddenly one day he announced he was moving to New York. Leaving.”

“Sounds like an asshole.” Blake muttered.
