Jesus F Christ.

It was like God was trying to punish her.

Maybe she’d always known this day would come.

She and Ward had gone their separate ways. Never seeking to resolve their argument. Her final words had hurt him. She knew that. The pain on his face still made her cringe.

But what a beautiful face it was.

Still is.

Samantha had thought they’d find a way back together, as they always did. It’s what they did. Fuck and fight. As crude as that sounded. But he was a dominant man, and she was a passionate woman. The two of them were like a chemistry experiment in a high school classroom.

Explosive.

This time, she hadn’t heard from him. Then again, she hadn’t reached out either. Weeks had passed, and she still thought it was just a matter of time.

Blake had been a toddler back then, sick with a tummy bug or the flu. Samantha had been distracted with him and busy with her business.

She just expected to hear Ward knocking on her door one day and they’d carry on. Lust, love, desire, fighting, and then coming back together.

She knew he was the one.

But he had never said he loved her. The source of their fights.

Then she had caught Blake’s bug and felt terrible. Throwing up, tired, grumpy.

Except she hadn’t.

She was pregnant.

After all thehow had this happened, Samantha pulled herself together and faced the truth of the situation.

It had been two months since she’d seen Ward, and rather than ring him and announce he was going to be a father, she drove to his house.

Something made her park on the road that day.

The day her heart broke.

Breathing through her all-day nausea, Samantha watched Ward kissing a slim, beautiful woman in his driveway as they stood beside a brand-new silver Mercedes-Benz.

A wealthy woman.

Dancing around their ankles was a gorgeous little girl with long, dark hair.

She’d watched them for a few minutes, tears running down her face, then driven away. Ward had never looked up once. The affection on his face was clear as day.

He loved these two girls.

It had taken her a few more weeks to learn Ward Montgomery was dating Tina Kennedy. And the little girl was Bella Kennedy.

Over the years, Samantha followed their family, albeit from a very great distance, and pieced together that Bella had changed her name to Montgomery. The family was in the news from time to time and all their children had taken his name.

As far as she knew, they had never officially married.

Samantha had never told Jacob who his father was. Was it wrong of her? Yes. But she’d done the same thing to Blake, so it was just easier to parent them on her own.

After all, Blake’s loser father had told her to abort the child, so she wasn’t going to risk Ward ripping out her heart by saying the same thing.
