Me: Worse.

Lexy: What could be worse than that?

Me: I need to go and find him. Don’t wait for me after school. I’ll explain all later.

Lexy: Okay, but be careful xx

Me: xxx

After sending the text I call an Uber. He doesn’t get to sleep with me, beat someone up just for talking to me, and go into hiding because he can’t face me. Not happening.

Chapter Forty-three

Jordin

I’mstillseethingbythe time the Uber pulls up to his house. After thanking the driver I walk past the white picket fence lined with all sorts of beautiful plants and flowers I didn’t notice the last time I was here. Its welcoming and inviting. I peer up at the modest two-story house. I don’t know why but I expected him to live somewhere lavish like Saint. Except this house is like mine. Taking the last three steps that lead up to the porch I take in a deep breath knocking the door three times.

“Just a second,” I hear a softly spoken voice say.

The door slowly opens revealing a small grey-haired lady in her late eighties. Knowing that this is the lady Caleb was dancing with at the wedding makes my heart expand in my chest. This must be his grandmother.

“Hi, I’m sorry to have disturbed you but is Caleb here?”

“Caleb? Yes of course. Come on in child,” she sweetly offers opening the door wide for me to step in.

The house smells incredible. It almost reminds me of my grandma’s house. She baked cakes for a living and would always bake a separate cake just for me. She knew I loved to decorate them and would wait until I got home from school to help me. Her designs and swirls of icing were always immaculate whereas mine were messy and all over the place. But they tasted just as good.

“Can I get you something to drink dear. Tea maybe?” she offers leading me into the kitchen.

A double vodka and coke would be real nice right about now.

“Oh no, I’m fine thankyou.”

“How about a slice of nanna’s famous apple pie then?”

“If it tastes as good as it smells then yes please I’d love some.”

Walking over to the counter she lifts up a large carving knife slicing off a generous piece of pie before placing it on a small side dish then hands it to me.

“Come on into the living room dear. Mines in there already. We can eat it together.”

“That would be lovely,” I say following her whilst looking around for any sign of him but there are none. Where the hell is he?

“Sorry dear, who did you say you were here to see again?” she says taking a seat in a beautifully designed floral fireside reclining chair.

I take the seat next to her resting the plate on my lap. “Caleb. I’m a friend from school and was wanting to talk to him about a homework assignment we have.”

“Of course,” she says knowingly. “This old memory isn’t what it used to be you see. Age is unforgiving like that sometimes,” she says lifting the cup from the saucer taking a sip of her tea.

“Oh dear I forgot the sugar again,” she says about to get up from her chair, but I stop her.

“Let me get it for you.”

“That’s very kind of you darling. It’s the third cupboard to the right. The teaspoons are just in the drawer below.”

“I’ll be right back,” I tell her heading back in the direction we came from.

I didn’t stay here long enough to take the place in fully the last time I was here. It was so dark; the sun hadn’t quite yet risen.
