Page 110 of His to Ruin

I can’t concentrate on anything else throughout the rest of the day. Everyone’s excitement this morning about being off school next week on break is overshadowed by the news of what’s happened. It’s all anyone’s been talking about all day. It’s all I could think about. Rumours have begun to circulate that she had a stroke. Some say she got burgled and had a heart attack at the shock of it. The latest one at lunch time was that Caleb killed her. Everyone knew Mark Epson was talking pure bullshit. From what I hear he won’t be saying anything else for a while after what the jocks did to him when they found out what he was saying. My guess is he is going to be needing a bed at the same hospital.

Say what you want about the jocks but they know who is in charge in this school and if Saint, Colton, or Caleb heard that the jocks were letting kids away with making up vicious rumours like that it would be their balls on the chopping block.

After school my mind is made up. Pulling out my phone I open the Uber app. He probably doesn’t want me there but I’m going to show up for him anyway. I just need to check that he’s ok and that he’s not on his own and then I’ll leave. No one should be alone at a time like this.

The automatic double doors of the hospital open for me to step inside. Walking over to the receptionist desk I realise that I have no clue what her first name is.

Shit.

“Excuse me,” I say timidly acting stupid. “My parents just phoned and told me to meet them here. My grandmother was brought in a while ago. They’re with her now.

“What’s the name?” He asks, sliding on a pair of glasses so he can read the computer screen.

“Granny Bailey.”

He looks up from the screen quirking a brow.

“I’ve only ever known her as granny Bailey,” I lie.

“Date of birth?”

“No clue. Were one of those weird families that don’t celebrate birthdays.”

He looks at me as if to say are you for real.

“I’m sorry but without that information I can’t give you any details. Confidentiality and all that.”

“Come on seriously? This is my grandmother we’re talking about here. She could be dying right now for all I know calling out the name of her favourite grandchild, which is me by the way. Please help a girl out.”

“I would suggest you check the ER department. If she’s not there then you’ll need to check the wards floor by floor.”

“Floor by floor? That will take forever.”

“Perhaps when you do finally catch up with your grandmother all being well of course, you should maybe oh I don’t know spend more time with her. Finding out her first name for a start. It may come in handy in the future.”

“You did not just say that to me.”

Instead of answering me he picks up the ringing phone.

“Dick,” I mutter walking away from him.

Floor by floor it is.

Almost an hour later I’m on the fifth and last floor. Honestly, it’s no wonder why nurses are so fit. You can get in all your daily steps in just an hour of walking around this place there’s that many wards. When the elevator door dings open a sign that says Intensive Care Unit welcomes me.

Rounding the corner I spot a young nurse at the nurse’s station typing something on a computer. Lifting her head from the computer she eyes me curiously. Hoping she doesn’t stop me I hurriedly walk past her with my head held high like I know where I’m going. I don’t. I haven’t got the first clue around this place.

“Can I help you?” she calls out just as I’m halfway around a corner. Damn it, why didn’t I stop off at the gift shop on the way in? I should have bought flowers or something pretending that they were for a sick relative.

“Nope its fine. I know where I’m going, but thanks though.” I tell her, continuing to round the corner before she has the chance to stop me.

That’s when I see him sitting on the floor with his back against a wall, eyes glazed over staring into space. He doesn’t see me at first, but when his eyes finally lift to meet mine heartbreak is all I see.

I run to him pulling him into my arms.

“She’s gone Jordin. She’s gone,” he cries.

“I’m sorry,” I tell him over and over, rocking his head in my chest.
