“Do you think she can still hear me?”

“I believe she can.”

I nod.

“I just don’t know if I can do this without her.” I cry.

“You’re never on your own whilst you have me, you hear? Never.”

“Will you wait with her whilst I go and speak with the doctors. Give you some privacy to say your goodbyes?”

She nods letting out a whimper.

Placing a gentle kiss to nanna’s forehead I tell her that I will be back soon then head out the door.

As soon as its closed I spot Doctor Matterson over by the reception desk typing on a computer.

“It’s time.”

Chapter Forty-five

Caleb

“Areyouready?”DoctorMatterson asks.

With shaky hands I take my phone from my pocket ignoring all the missed calls and texts and scroll through my playlist until I find what I’m searching for before hitting the play button.

Suzie places her hand in mine.

Together we hold nannas hands as the chords of her favourite song Amazing Grace plays on my iPhone speaker.

Placing one last kiss to her forehead I whisper, “Sleep tight nanna. I love you.” Just as the machine stops bleeping.

Chapter Forty-six

Jordin

Isitinclassthe next day staring at his empty seat when multiple bleeps of texts sound out around the room. Hushed whispers turn into full gasps making me wonder what the heck is going on.

“That’s awful. Poor Caleb,” Mabel bocks out.

I instantly snap to attention sitting up straighter in my chair. Poor Caleb. What does she mean poor Caleb? What’s going on?

“I know. My heart aches for him,” Christy says sympathetically placing a hand on her heart.

“What’s going on?” I ask Savanna who’s sitting directly in front of me.

“Andy Morrison lives just across the road from Caleb. He’s off sick with the flu and told everyone Caleb’s grandmother was carried away from his house last night in a stretcher. He said could see the ambulance crew doing CPR. Like how awful. I really hope she’s alright.”

“When?”

“Last night.”

My heart hammers in my chest remembering how kind she was when she welcomed me into her home and what she told me about it just being the two of them. I hope he’s not on his own at the hospital.

“It doesn’t look too good if I’m being honest,” she says turning away from me.

Maybe Saint is there with him? I think to myself just as the smell of apple pie hits my nostrils.
