“I don’t think so. I mean, I just moved here a few weeks ago. I’ve really only been to the local beach and mall so far.”

“Ohhh,” she smiles clicking her fingers. “That’s where I’ve seen you before. You left a bag in the mall last week. You’re fast girl. I had to practically chase you down to get it back to you,” she jokes.

“Yeah, sorry about that. My little sister wasn’t feeling too good and I had to get her home before she threw up all over the place,” I lie.

“I’m Lexy. I work in the little coffee bar next to the ice cream parlour.”

I suppose people look different when they are not wearing their uniform but there’s something else that’s different about this girl from the first time I saw her.

“I just finished my shift when I spotted you leaving.”

“Thanks again for that by the way. I’m Jordin,” I say, admiring her ice blond hair.

“It’s no biggy honestly. Happens all the time,” she says waving it off like saving me from losing 200 dollars’ worth of new clothes for Millie was nothing.

“This your first day here?”

“That obvious hum?” I chuckle. “Hey, was your hair a different colour when we met at the mall?” I ask quizzically looking at the blond strands. It could be my imagination but I could have sworn her hair was a different colour before.

“Hum? Oh yeah,” she says gesturing to the ends of her hair. “I just recently changed it.”

“I thought there was something different. That colour looks good on you to.”

“Thanks.” She twirls the end of one curl with her fingers. “I had some pink in it but fancied a change so just went full on blond again.”

“I’d love to do something different with my hair, but my parents can be strict when it comes to things like that.”

“Really? How come?”

“My mom had a bad experience in college and badly damaged her hair and had to cut it short because so much of it broke and fell out.”

“Oh shit, that’s awful. I have heard of that happening to people. To be honest I think it depends on the products you use. I did my own hair once but quickly learnt my lesson never to do it again after accidently dying my hair green. Trust me when I say to avoid a DIY job if you can,” she laughs.

“Green?” I mock in surprise covering my mouth to hide my laughter.

“Yep. Worst day of my life. Couldn’t leave the house for days. I now use Annie in Annie’s hair studio on Prispin Road. She’s expensive but amazing.”

“Take it your parents don’t mind?”

“Mind? God no. My mom’s been too distracted to notice what I do these days thankfully.”

I cock a brow.

“She’s getting married again in a few weeks’ so it’s all wedding this, wedding that,” she exclaims in a mocking tone. “Anything that’s not about her wedding she doesn’t want to know. Don’t get me wrong I love shopping like anyone else, but I swear if she drags me to anymore bridal stores or cake testing places I’m going to scream.”

We sit together and chat all through our next three classes that we have together. Turns out we have a lot in common.

After class Lexy gives me a quick rundown of the school including all the details about one very hot thirty something year old teacher called Mr Jones. Apparently, I will know exactly what she means when I see him. I must admit I’m intrigued. The bell sounds for lunch and my stomach rumbles in agreement that it’s time for food.

“You sound as hungry as I do,” Lexy giggles picking up her books and pen from the table. “Would you by any chance like to join me for lunch?” she asks unsure.

I smile, “yes, I’d love that.”

“On good days like this I like to sit outside in the fresh air though if that’s alright.”

“Works for me,”

“Our cafeteria is like a greenhouse when it’s hot. Believe me there’s nothing worse than sitting in a room that stinks of curry and man sweat,” she says scrunching up her face in disgust.
