“I bring my own food everyday but if you need to go in and buy something I can wait,” she offers.

“No way… I bring in my own lunch too. Have done for years. My friends at my last school thought it was weird, but I just can’t eat cafeteria food, it’s disgusting.”

“Right,” she agrees. “And don’t even get me started on the hygiene ratings in some schools. Makes me wanna puke,” she says sticking her fingers up to her mouth and making a vomit motion. We laugh.

“I just need to stop by my locker for a sec to grab it.”

“No worries. I can walk with you. What’s your number?”

“316 I think. I was just assigned it this morning.”

She looks away as if embarrassed.

“316?”

“Yeah, but I’m thinking of asking if I can change it. I don’t know who had it last, but it smells so bad.”

“316 was my locker last year.”

“Oh shit. Sorry. I didn’t mean to be rude it’s just...”

“Your not, not at all. I don’t blame you for wanting to change. It really does stink. Some of the kids here used to play practical jokes on me, you know like putting stink bombs in my locker, that kind of shit. When I couldn’t stand the smell anymore I requested a change. I thought they would have changed it out by now or at least give it a good cleaning. I’m sorry you ended up with it.”

“No need for apologies. Not like you did it.”

“No, but still,” she shrugs.

Retrieving my lunch from the locker she says, “C’mon I’ll show you the garden. We need fresh air after that smell.”

Lexy picks a lovely spot and props herself against the bark of a tree that’s opposite mine. Sitting with her legs criss crossed she pulls out a bottle of water from her backpack taking a sip.

She’s right. It is nice out here. So much better than sitting in a hot cafeteria squashed in like a tin of sardines. Plus, I wouldn’t want a repeat of what happened earlier when I tried to find a seat, only to be told that its being held for someone. It’s so embarrassing.

“This is much better,” I agree lying back against the tree with my feet outstretched one foot over the other.

“Sure is.”

“I was just going to walk around the halls to get acquainted with the place but I’m glad I did this instead.”

“It’s a good way to get to know where you’re going I suppose. Plus it’s a lot quieter with everyone in there,” she says nodding towards the cafeteria. “Is this your first move to a new school?”

Shaking my head I admit, “I’ve had a few, although I’m not going to lie, this morning was a bit…weird.”

“Weird? Weird how?” she asks, then it’s as if a light bulb switches on in her head.

“Oh, you mean Colton. I’m kind of glad you brought that up because there’s something I didn’t mention when I was giving you the low down earlier. I wanted to be away from ear shot.” She looks around to check that no one is around before continuing, “You know how in like almost every school there’s two groups? The popular and non popular? Well, in this school there’s the jocks, the cheer squad, and then there’s the top dogs which is my soon to be stepbrother Saint, and his best friends Caleb and Colton. You met Colton this morning in class so to speak. Saint and Caleb had to go away for a few days to God knows where, doing only knows what. They do this sometimes.”

“So, you’re telling me that three guys are the top dogs,” I say making an inverted comma motion. “Over the jocks? Yeah right.”

“It’s true, but you need to be careful when it comes to them. Get too close and those particular dogs will give you more than just fleas.”

“C’mon you cannot seriously be telling me that just three guys sit on top of all the entire jock and cheer hierarchy?”

“Unfortunately, it’s true and believe me when I say you do not want to cross them.”

“I met that Colton guy this morning before class. He must have a Jackal and Hyde personality because he acted like a totally different person than the way he was in class earlier.”

“Oh shit,” she says looking deadly serious.
