I don’t look back at him.

“Do you still leave the window open for me?” he asks in a broken tone.

“Every night.”

Chapter Fifty-six

Jordin

“Thanksfordinner,”Itell Logan as we break away to go to our rooms.

“Maybe next time we will be uninterrupted and stay for dessert?”

“Yeah maybe, but next time I’m definitely buying.”

He gives me a full salute, “You got it boss. See you tomorrow.”

“Tomorrow,” I nod.

I head straight to my room after we say our goodbyes. Apart from what happened with Caleb, today has been amazing. Seeing Millie and Gale felt like life was breathing back into me again. I felt renewed like I was myself again. The endless pit of depression and despair faded with each passing hour.

After opening the window a crack I tell myself it’s only to allow fresh air to enter as I strip down into my underwear then climb in under the covers. I’m exhausted and unlike the past few nights I’m excited to wake up again in the morning.

“No don’t. Stop,” I call out to the masked man in my dream. He’s dressed all in black covered under the shadow of darkness with a silver gun in his hand pressed tight to someone’s forehead.

“Jordin save me,” Millie’s voice sobs but I can’t see her face and every time I run to her she’s out of reach as if I’m on an endless running machine.

“Don’t hurt her,” I scream to him.

The man lets out a menacing laugh that terrifies me to my very core. Just as he’s about to pull the trigger I wake bolting up on my bed with a sob, wrestling the sheets. Sweat coats my skin and my breathing is so fast it’s the only thing I hear until a deep raspy voice penetrates the room.

“Breathe baby. It was just a bad dream. Go back to sleep.”

I scurry back like I’ve just seen a ghost until I realise who it is.

“Caleb?”

His dark silhouette stands from the chair in the corner of my room. Walking over towards me he takes a seat at the side of the bed.

“Caleb,” I cry, scrambling to get to him with open arms.

He pulls me into his arms holding me tight to his chest, his hand on my hair soothing me.

“It’s okay baby. I’m here.”

“He hurt her, Caleb. He hurt her and I couldn’t stop him.”

“Shush,” he coos rocking me back and forth. “Baby, it was just a nightmare. I got you. Your safe now. Don’t think about it anymore.”

“But it felt so real and you being here means I’m still dreaming,” I sob, hearing the distress in my voice echo around the room.

His chest rises and falls with light laughter.

“I promise you, I’m very real.”

“How did you get in here?”,

“You left the window open for me like I knew you would.”nto fort Knox. Past the guards?”
