“Upper body strength?”
“Try climbing up a brick wall with just your fingertips. Shits painful.”
“Can I ask you something?”
“Anything,” he replies stroking my hair.
“Will you stay with me just for tonight so the man doesn’t come back?” I ask stifling a yawn still half asleep.
He kisses my forehead, “I’ll kill him if he does.”
We lie down together with me wrapped his arms like a warm comfort blanket gently rocking me to sleep.
“Caleb?”
“Yeah baby?”
“I don’t think I can forgive you.”
“I know,” he says his chest rising for a deep inhale. “I know I hurt you and for that I am truly sorry. I’m sorry for everything including what happened earlier. I didn’t know that Colton had invited those girls either, but I saw you with him and I used her to make you jealous. I swear that I will never hurt you like that again.”
“Why? Why did you do it, Caleb?” I whimper. “You ruined everything. You ruined me.”
“How much do you know about your family and the Garo’s?”
“Enough to know that they hate each other.”
“And you know what they are? What they do for a living?”
“I know they do more than just hurt people, yes.”
“Eric found out that your dad was working for Ian to get Marcus out of jail. That he had a connection to Viola. He wanted us to get into your house to see what info your dad had on Marcus.”
“And you did it?”
“Yes. When the house was empty I went through your house for anything that would link back to Marcus and his case, but there was nothing.”
“Where did I fit into all of this?”
“Eric was told James had a son. We only had a surname to go on but we knew that he would be enrolling in our school. But there was no male by the name of Richmond. Only a female by the name of Richmonds.”
“Because there was an administrative error. I asked them to correct it on my first day but they didn’t.”
I feel him nodding before he speaks.
“We didn’t know until the day in Lexy’s pool that you were the person we were looking for. We figured the best way into the house without the Maloti’s becoming suspicious was through you. One of us had to get close to you. I didn’t expect you to be different from all the other girls, but I knew from the minute I saw you at the beach in that tiny bikini with all that sass that you were mine.” He pauses before continuing, “Sometimes at night I would climb in your window. I liked to watch you sleep.”
“You climbed through my window just to watch me sleep?”
“You look so peaceful when you sleep. Its mesmerising.”
“I had no idea. I didn’t know you even thought of me like that. You were cruel and mean Caleb. You used me to get what you wanted. You were with other girls in front of me letting them touch you. And you were touching them back in front of me.”
“I was scared.”
“You’re not scared of anything.”
