“Does this business concern a certain girl who’s welcome home party we’re going to tonight.”

“Might do,” I say not wanting to lie to my best friend but I won’t give him any more details than that.

“Caleb, c’mon man. You need to think smart about this,” he sighs with exaggerating tapping to the side of his head. “Let her go man. She’s a fucking Maloti. She’s not one of us and never will be.”

“That’s bullshit and you know it. She’s just as much a part of all this just as much as we are.”

“Wake the hell up, Caleb. She’s the enemy. They are not going to let the two of you be together. No good can come of this, you hear me. Let her go!”

“I can’t do that.”

“You can and you will if you want to continue breathing in this world and I can’t….” he pauses sighing deeply before continuing. “I can’t lose another brother Caleb. I won’t.”

“She’s not the enemy, Saint. They are but not her.”

“Look, I’m only saying this because your my best friend and pretty much one of the very few people I love that’s left in this world, but if Ian finds out what you’re doing with his granddaughter you’re as good as dead. You need to stay away from her especially tonight Caleb I mean it. No looking, no touching, no sneaking off, nothing. You stay the fuck away from her because if you don’t I won’t be able to help you.”

“It’s that easy hum, just stay away just like that.” I snort clicking my finger. “That what you do with Lexy?”

He shakes his head giving up the fight.

“Get showered and get dressed. Dad wants us all suited and booted and ready to leave in an hour,” he says turning away slamming my door behind him.

“Fuck,” I shout into the air banging my fist on the bed frame.

Chapter Sixty-one

Jordin

Ilookatmyselfin the mirror swaying from side to side in my red one shoulder full length split thigh evening dress. Loving how the sown in white diamonds catch and sparkle in the light above me. It’s beautiful, or it would be apart from the obvious bruise on my cheek bone. I wince when my fingers make contact with the bruised and delicate skin.

“Looks painful,” Alisha the dress maker sympathises.

“It looks worse than it is,” I tell her, as I make my way to Jody the make-up artist who is waiting for me to take a seat next to her so we can begin.

“Don’t worry about it honey the bruise kit I have works wonders and with a little added concealer I can fix it to look like it never even happened,” she reassures, opening up a wheeled palette with colours of shades of green, peach, lavender and yellow.

It takes almost forty-five minutes to complete the look and another twenty for my hair. When I look in the mirror again it’s hard to recognise the person staring back at me.

“You look amazing,” Alisha complements.

“You really do honey; you look absolutely stunning. God love any man in the room tonight. They won’t be able to keep their eyes off you,” Jody says packing all her things back into the large black case. Alisha comes over to help.

“God love the wives you mean. There’s not a man who won’t be vying for your attention I can assure you that.”

“I don’t want their attention,” I retort just as a throat clears in the entrance to my room.

“Oh already got one I see,” Jody coos, looking out towards Logan who’s standing in my doorway looking as handsome as all hell in a dark fitted suit that make his green eyes pop.

“You look incredible,” he appraises.

I turn a light shade of red at his assessing gaze.

“I think that’s our cue to go, Alisha.” Jody instructs, and they both clear out of the room.

“Thank you,” I call back to them but there already gone. I take myself in at the mirror again. Jody was right it looks as though nothing ever happened. I wonder how many times she’s had to apply make up to cover bruises for people just like me. The thought turns my stomach sour. Closing my eyes momentarily I snap them open again when I feel the heat of Logan’s body radiating my back.

Our eyes lock in the mirror.
