“Nothing’s broken. I said I would talk to him, which I did.”

“Clearly, cause back there it sure as hell looked like it didn’t it?”

“Look. You need to understand that Saint isn’t someone you can tell what to do. Don’t expect miracles overnight.”

“Why?”

“Why what?”

“Why does he hate her so much? What could she have possibly done to deserve turning everyone at school against her?”

“He doesn’t hate her. Just let it go Jordin.”

“Could have fooled me.”

“Then consider yourself fucking fooled.”

“What does that even mean Caleb?”

Slamming my foot on the brake pedal I pull over on to the of the side road. Why doesn’t she fucking listen? She keeps going on and on, digging deeper and deeper for answers to questions she’ll never get. What’s between Saint and Lexy is between them. If she doesn’t butt her nose out of his business she’s going to get hurt.

“He’s protecting her.”

A cruel laugh bursts from her chest.

“Protecting her?” Is that supposed to be some kind of a fucking joke? You call getting those bitches at school to bully her, humiliate her, and beat her up her protecting her then you’re sicker than I thought.”

“First of all miss high and fucking mighty, those girls only did that because they were jealous she’s living with him. Which is not his fault. He thought she could handle it, that it was just girls being bitchy. As soon as he found out that they laid hands on her he put a stop to it immediately.”

“Why won’t he let any of the guys at school talk to her either then, hum? He put someone in the freaking hospital Caleb.”

“Why? I’ll tell you fucking why. That guy that you’re talking about raped a girl. Bet you didn’t know that did you though did you?”

Bile forms in the pit of my stomach. Rape? Oh my god. That poor girl.

“Who?”

“You don’t know her. She left school soon after it happened. The hush money his rich ass parents give hers was enough to make the accusations disappear.”

“Poor girl. That’s awful.”

“Her parents were known drug addicts. Probably why he prayed on her in the first place. The piece of shit threatened her that no one would believe a word if she went to the police. The only reason he got caught was because Kelly Harrison heard her screams and came rushing in to find him on top of her with her clothes ripping off. So yeah, Saint put the dick in the hospital when he found out that he was talking to Lexy because that’s his way of trying to protect her. She just doesn’t fucking know it and he wants it to stay that way.”

“I don’t get it. Why doesn’t he just tell her this instead of making her think it’s because he hates her?”

I give her a pointed look, “That’s his business, not yours, and certainly not mine.”

“But if he just tells her she’ll understand.”

I grip the steering wheel so hard my knuckles turn white.

“Are you deaf? I said stay out of it Jordin. This conversation goes no further than this car either, you got that? He may not have wanted any physical harm to come to Lexy before but it doesn’t change the fact she stole his dead brother’s bike which means more to him than you or I will ever know. Mark my words if Saint finds out she was involved, everything up until now will look like child’s play. So let it go.”

I give her a minute to digest that before adding “And just so were clear, the deals not fucking off. You will continue to do as I say until I say so. Got it?”

I wait for her response, but nothing comes.

We continue in silence the rest of the way to her house. It’s not until I hear a faint snore that I realise she’s fallen asleep. I want to pull over and watch her. It wouldn’t be the first time I’ve watched her sleep wondering what she dreams about.
