She makes her way to the door looking so damn cute in a yellow and white striped summer dress and white sandals. I want to stay mad at her for the way she woke me but that beautiful little face is too hard to resist.

“Okay, okay. I’m getting up. Besides, I already said last night I would come.”

“Yeah well mom thought maybe you had changed your mind like you usually do when we go to do anything together.”

Guilt coils into the pit of my stomach because she’s right. I spent so much time away from home last year, but that’s exactly what Max wanted. He took me away from everyone so he could have me all to himself for his sick twisted pleasure. I shake my head not wanting him in my head rent free for one more second. Pulling back the covers I begrudgingly drag myself away from the warm heat of my bed.

“I’m up. Happy?”

She nods enthusiastically.

“Now close the door and let me get ready. I’ll be down shortly.”

She cheers in delight clapping her hands telling me that we are going to build the biggest and bestest sandcastles ever then rushes out my bedroom door. I smile as I hear her shout down to mom that I’m getting up now as she runs down the stairs.

After my shower I twist the cap off the bottle of moisturising cream, lathering it on all over my body before slipping on my red bikini that took me ages to find in an unpacked box. Annoyingly it’s gotten a little tight especially around my bust thanks to the extra pounds I’ve gained by not being so stressed. If I’m not careful a boob might pop out of this thing. I’m definitely going to have to buy a new one that fits me better, but this will just have to do for today. I pull on a pair of frayed denim shorts and a white tank top, pairing the outfit with wedged sandals.

Sitting at the vanity table I reach for my bulging make up bag then change my mind last minute.

“What are you doing?” I say to myself in the mirror. Foundation in this heat is a big no, no. Opening the drawer I spy a bottle of tinted moisturiser buried underneath some eye shadow palettes. Perfect. It’s just enough to provide a little veil of colour and it has SPF sunscreen in it for added protection from the sun on my face. After applying, I tie my golden-brown hair into a big messy bun then add a little nude lip gloss to my lips to complete the look but I’m forgetting something. I click my fingers. Sunglasses. Which unfortunately are buried somewhere in the remaining unpacked boxes. Searching the boxes one by one I rummage around until I find what I’m looking for.

“Great. Just freakin great,” I say dejected, holding the sunglasses up by the broken arm that’s hanging on by a thread. Hopefully sticky tape will hold these up until I get a new pair, besides no one’s going to care what I look like and it’s only the beach, it will be packed with families and kids.

Chapter Five

Jordin

Ican’twaittoget out of the stifling heat in this car. Its hotter than Satan’s ball sack today. The leather on the seats stick to the backs of my thighs even with the air-con blasting.

“Gosh its hot in here girls,” mom says, fanning herself furiously with one hand as she pulls up the parking brake.

“Wouldn’t be surprised if I get out of this car and have a sweat stain on my butt crack.”

“Eww,” Millie and I say in unison as we all burst out laughing. As I step out of the car I’m instantly hit with the smell of the ocean air, seaweed, and the sounds of the ocean waves crashing against the pebbles. Its music to my ears.

My eyes scan the beach and I was right it is packed, but it's not with families. It's with crowds of girls in tiny string bikinis and boys in board shorts hovering around flash cars that’s been parked along the beach, drinking beers, partying, and having fun. Some even have a game of football on the go. Music begins to blast out from one of the vehicles and my enthusiasm for a quiet beach day plummets.

“Hey girls?” mom says pulling the bags from the trunk of the car in the parking bay. “Let’s give these guys some space and go a bit further down the beach.”

“Kay,” we agree, not wanting to be anywhere near them anyway. As we walk on to the beach our bags in hand, I notice more than a few heads turn in our direction like were trespassing on a public beach or something. We ignore them and keep walking.

“This spot will have to do,” she informs us as she sets our bags down onto the warm sand.

“That’s because they’re taking up most of it,” Millie says with a pout pointing over to the crowd.

“Now, now Millie, the beach is big enough for everyone to enjoy. Let’s just have fun and forget about them,” mom lightly scolds pitching up a wind breaker around us for privacy while I reapply more sun cream to Millie as she eagerly pulls out her new bucket and spade. As soon as I’m finished, she runs as fast as she can towards the water ready to work on building her sandcastles.

I take a quick look around to make sure I’m covered from the nearby crowd then strip down to my bikini.

After a full hour of packing down wet sand and structuring our castles so they won’t collapse, I tell Millie that this is my last one. She pats the bucket twice and with careful precision lifts the bucket up to reveal the last castle in our sand kingdom.

“Ta da,” I sing giving her lots of praise. The smile on her beautiful face is everything.

“Stay right there you two and don’t move. I want to capture this and show dad, he will be so sad he missed this.”

Millie moves quickly when mom picks out her camera from her handbag, planting her tiny body down in front of me.

I wrap both of my arms around her lovingly, taking in the scent of her cocoa butter sunscreen on her skin that I may have lathered on a little too much. I plant a kiss to her soft cheek just as I hear the click of the camera.
