“Great. Then it’s a plan. I’ll even do a picnic and everything like we used to when you were younger.”

I chuckle as a memory comes to mind of dad running up and down the beach clapping his hands like a crazy person trying to chase away seagulls that would not give up the fight to steal my sandwiches. It was the funniest thing I had ever seen. Of course it was all in vain because they just kept coming back. Dad wasn’t just exhausted by the end but covered in bird poop for his troubles.

“Well goodnight then,” she says closing the door tight behind her.

I turn back to the picture remembering the day it was taken. Unable to hold it in any longer, I allow the tears to fall. This will be the last time, I tell myself. The last time I will ever shed a tear over them. The very last time I’ll ever let anyone hurt me like that ever again.

With the palm of my hand I swipe the tears away and complete a series of some deep breath exercises I learnt online to help ease anxiety. In the nose and out through the mouth I inwardly repeat, feeling the red mist dissipate and my tense body calm. Reaching for the scissors I used earlier to open the taped up moving boxes I peel away the metal flap that hold the photograph in place to the frame. Roughly pulling it out I rip it into tiny shreds throwing it back in the trash where it belongs.

Fuck that felt good. So good that I feel the anger inside slowly beginning to dissipate, allowing calmness to come over me once again. Grabbing my stuff I head into my bathroom and turn on the shower.

Twenty minutes later I feel my eyes going heavy as I snuggle into my comforter and pray for sleep to take me.

Chapter Four

Jordin

Thump,thump,thump.

“What the hell,” I shout startled from my deep sleep to something or rather someone thumping on my head with a pillow.

I go to sit up on my bed but quickly dive back under the covers like a vampire that’s about to be incinerated when blazing sunshine hits my eyes.

“Close the blinds I’m sleeping,” I whine.

“Nope,” taunts the voice of my little sister Millie.

“Millie,” I draw out in irritation.

Millie hops onto my bed then begins to bounce up and down on my mattress causing the comforter to shift allowing the sunlight to hit my face.

“Millie stop,” I yell lying back down placing a pillow over my head. “Get out of my room now.”

She takes no notice of my angry tone and continues to bounce harder almost making my entire upper body lift off the mattress.

“Millie! Enough already.”

“Wake up lazy head. Wake up. Mom is taking us to the beach soon and said its time for you to get up.”

“What time is it?”

“It’s just before noon silly. So get up. We had breakfast already and everything. Now we have to wait on you, cept mom says it’s not wise to wake up a teenager before noon but it’s almost noon now so come on.”

I sit up more abruptly than I should have almost knocking her off balance. The smile she was sporting leaves her face immediately, but she knows I’d never let her fall. She continues her bounce.

“Millie, I swear if you don’t get out of my room now tomorrow morning you will get my wakeup call from hell.”

“Yeah, yeah Jordin.”

“You think I’m kidding? Do you know that metal music that dad loves and you hate? Tomorrow you will wake up to it blasting from my Bluetooth speaker in your room, which I will hide by the way just for added fun. Somewhere you can’t reach it. Now I won’t say it again GET OUT,” I yell pointing a finger to the door.

Realising how serious I am about that threat she stops her bouncing and jumps from my bed.

“Gosh, mom was right about teenagers waking up early, they really can be mean.”

She gives me her best doe-eyed look.

“Come on Jordin. Please get up and come to the beach with us. It will be fun I promise, and we packed like a zillion snacks for us to eat. Please don’t make me wait anymore.”
