Chapter Eight

Jordin

Theshoppingmallishuge. At least three times the size of the one we had back home. A giant water fountain sits in the center of the mall with water jets that come up from the ground. I watch as kids weave around the jets laughing and playing catch with one another as the water shoots from every direction.

We left Mom around a half hour ago. Millie was just as bored looking at shoes and handbags as I was.

“You wanna join in with them? Looks like fun,” I say nudging her shoulder as we walk past.

“No way, I’m far too old to be playing like that,” she tells me. Except the inquisitive look on her face says otherwise.

“You’re eight years old Millie,” I chuckle. “Go and have some fun. You never know, you might even make some new friends and besides, you know what mom is like when she shoe shops, we could be here all day. Go and play and have some fun. I promise I will only be right over there,” I tell her pointing over to a seating area next to an ice cream parlour and coffee shop. My arms desperately need a break from carrying all these heavy bags.

“You sure I’m not too old Jordin?”

“Nah, go on,” I tell her with as much encouragement as I can muster, taking the shopping bags out of her little hands and gently push her in the direction of the fountains and playing kids.

I giggle, “Go, but try not to get too wet though otherwise we will have to buy more clothes to get you all dry again.”

Her face scrunches, letting me know that there’s no way in hell that will be happening. She straightens her shoulders then shyly makes her way over to a little girl with pigtails in her hair. There’s nothing more Millie hates than shopping.

Finding a spot that has an unobstructed view of Millie I take a seat looking up at the upper floors. Mom can easily spot us if she looks down. Another half hour rolls by quickly and I cannot take this heat anymore. My mouth waters as I run my eyes over all the delicious flavours of ice-creams on display next to me in the ice-cream parlour window and I can’t resist.

I order my favourite mint chocolate chip ice cream on a cone but I won’t get one for Millie yet, not until she’s finished playing.

Just then Millie looks over to me as I go back to my seat. I give her a small wave as she giggles with the kids she’s playing with. She’s made some friends already by the looks of it. She’s laughing so hard as she dodges the water shooting up from the ground. It makes me giggle just watching her.

I take a big lick of my ice cream, swirling the smooth sweet texture around my tongue then swallow. Humming to myself, I close my eyes savouring the taste. It tastes so good, not like the cheap grainy crap I’m used to back home. I must have hummed a little loud because suddenly I’m overcome with a feeling like someone’s watching me.

A shiver runs down my spine.

I cast my eyes around the mall and that’s when I see him. Jet-black hair and piercing blue eyes stare down at me from the second-floor glass balcony, instantly making my cheeks heat and my heart race. It’s the tall guy from the beach.

Shit, shit, shit, this isn’t happening. I wasn’t supposed to see him again.

I’m frozen to the spot when he doesn’t take his glare off me.

Its intimidating as hell like we are locked in some sort of challenge for dominance, but I won’t be the first to look away.

The last words he said to me play in my mind.

“You’re going to regret that, princess.”

There’s no way I’m going to let his words scare me. Realising I’ve got some ice cream on the corner of my mouth I go to wipe it away, but at the last second change my mind. Keeping my gaze firmly fixed on him I seductively lift my middle finger up to my mouth and swipe up the ice cream sucking it into my mouth, giving him the bird at the same time. Taking another big lick of the ice cream I swirl it around my tongue, watching him tighten his grip around the glass rail. His blue eyes blaze like he wants to kill me and possibly fuck me at the same time. I give him my best smile just as a beautiful brunette pins herself to his side and curls a manicured hand over his shoulder trying to bring his attention to her, but he takes no notice brushing her off. Must be his girlfriend.

Seconds tick by feeling like minutes.

Ice cream begins to drip down onto my fingers and I’m desperate to look over to Millie but to hell with him, I’m not backing down. The brunettes not alone either. There’s at least three guys and two girls, possibly more that have joined her that I can see. All too immersed in their own conversations to notice him staring at me.

Shit why is he still staring?

This is starting to become uncomfortable, but try telling my body that as a spark of sexual tension ignites in my belly.

Someone behind him says something to him and he finally breaks our stare down. I can’t help but inwardly celebrate my silly victory over him. The second he’s distracted I let out the breath I didn’t realise I was holding, throw the half-melted ice cream in the trash, pick up my bags and bolt over to Millie as fast as I can taking her little hand in mine and lead her towards the exit in a hurried pace.

“Jordin. What are you doing? Why are we leaving? I was having fun. Mom’s not even back yet!”

“I’ll text mom and let her know we are waiting in the car,” I tell her, continuing to walk out the door in a hurried pace, desperate to get outside to fill my lungs with fresh air and get away from the heavy tension in the mall.
