“What’s up?” he asks, climbing out of his BMW.

“Problem at the club I need to go and sort out. Can you stay here with Lexy until I get back?”

Lexy’s eyes widen in surprise. “You’re going to Ketch?”

I throw her an apologetic look. “Yeah. Sorry, babe. I’ll be back as quickly as I can.” I turn to Colton. “You heard from Caleb today?” I ask before Lexy takes off, sprinting towards the stairs.

My heart drops, thinking she’s pissed at me for leaving. Then she calls back, “I’m coming with you,” before Colton has a chance to answer my Caleb question.

“Whoa, whoa, whoa. No fucking way you’re stepping foot in that club again,” I warn. Last time she was there, some fucking douchebag was trying to get into her pants. No fucking way is that happening again.

She spins with a deep scowl etched on her gorgeous face. “Excuse me! What did you just say to me?”

“I can’t fix what I need to fix and watch you simultaneously. No,” I affirm with an iron fist.

Her arms cross over her chest furiously with one brow arching.

“Watch me!”

“I can look after her in the VIP room while you’re sorting stuff out. I was going anyway. Thought we all were. It’s why I was here, to see what was happening. Caleb said yesterday he couldn’t come because he had plans with Jordin and “can’t be disturbed,” whatever that means,” he says, emphasizing Caleb’s words back to me.

Jealousy rears its ugly head, like nothing I’ve felt before, searing through my bones when she smiles at him like he just hung the fucking moon.

My jaw tightens, and my teeth grind. How the hell can I argue with her now? Fuck you, Colton!

Left with no other choice, I relent. “Fine, but we need to go ASAP.”

“I’ll be ready in record time. You’ll see.”

“What’s wrong with what you’re wearing?”

She looks down at her sweater and leggings and then back at me like I’d seriously offended her.

“There’s no way I’m going to a club looking like this. And before you even think about arguing with me, don’t! I’m changing, and that’s that.”

As soon as she’s out of sight, I grab Colton by the scruff of the neck, pinning him against the wall. The nonchalant expression he wore moments ago transforms into a mix of confusion and mild apprehension as his body tensed under my grip.

“Don’t ever undermine me in front of her again.”

“Hey, man. I was trying to do you a solid,” he says, not looking in the slightest bit scared.

“How the fuck was that doing me a solid?” I growl, my frustration and anger simmering just beneath the surface.

“You were the one who said you wanted full trust and honesty with her. Right or wrong? How’s that supposed to happen if you’re gone all the time and coming home at all hours? She needs to see what your life will look like from now on. What her life is going to look like.” I loosen my grip on him, and he continues. “A life you want to make happy. Did you even see the way her face lit up? She needs this. She needs to get out of this house more, Saint. You can’t keep her locked away in here. It isn’t good for her.”

“How the fuck do you know what’s good for her?”

“I know more than you think.”

“What’s that supposed to mean?”

“I know you want to wrap her in cotton wool to keep her safe. Trust me, man, I get it, I do. She’ll only end up resenting you for it. If you want that girl to be happy, then you need to allow her to enjoy some freedom and her youth. Otherwise, she’ll end up going crazy being cooped up all the time.” He pauses, blowing out a long breath. “There is no threat for now. Let her have this.”

His words hang in the air, and for a moment, there is a tense silence between us. Colton’s expression softens, understanding etched in his features. I released my grip completely, allowing him some space. As much as I want to come home to Lexy waiting for me naked in my bed every night, I also know she’s a free spirit that’s been held down for far too long. She doesn’t want that for her future.

We’ve already discussed it. She wants to graduate school and is applying to attend university in the city to study Interior Design. Something I’ll only ever agree to if she takes her security to class. I don’t give two shits if they wear suits or jeans and chucks to blend in. They’ll be there. No ifs ands or buts.

“Get Chains on the phone. I want our security doubled.”
