“So, if Jordin said I couldn’t get it up and that she left me because it put too much of an emotional strain on the marriage, then neither of us would face criminal charges?”

“It’s possible, yes. As I said, this is not my area of expertise. I could arrange for my colleague to discuss the intricacies and guide you through the process if you would like?”

I run a hand along my chin, thinking about it before answering as the scent of Caleb’s cigarette smoke fills the air. “Yeah. Have them call me by the end of today. In the meantime, try to find out the name of the company they sent that tape to. I don’t give a shit how much it costs. If we need to pay people off, then pay them off. I need this done ASAP!”

“Yes, sir. I’ll call you as soon as I hear any updates.”

Caleb, visibly seething with frustration, clenches his jaw as he paces the room, his voice gruff and low. “We should’ve just killed Ian while we still had the chance.”

“What we need to do is stay calm.”

“How can I stay calm?” he shouts, his impatience clear when he grounds the cigarette into the ashtray with a furious twist, crushing it beneath his thumb as if venting his anger on the tiny embers. “I swore to Jordin that I would fix this mess. Now look where we are. We’re up shits creek without a fucking paddle.”

I refuse to consider that this plan won’t work. It has to. It’s the only way we can all get what we want without jeopardizing the girls.

“And we will. There’s still time for Marcus to get released.”

“Or we could take our men right now and kill the bastard ourselves.”

“And potentially get Jordin killed in the process? No. We gave Marcus our word. I won’t go back on our deal now.”

“Then you can be the one to tell Lexy you’re marrying her best fucking friend on Saturday,” he roars, angrily pointing his finger at me like this is somehow all my fault.

“Hey! Don’t fucking yell at me! I’m just trying to do what’s best. Lexy and Jordin will understand. They have to.”

No sooner was her name spoken than she poked her head through the door, and I swallowed thickly, my heart pounding. “Is everything okay? I was walking past and heard shouting and…”

“Everything’s fine,” I snap, regretting it instantly when her face falls.

“Fuck this. I’m going upstairs.” Caleb storms out of the room, almost taking the door off its hinges when he slams it closed, making Lexy jump.

I perch my ass on the edge of the desk, pulling her soft body to mine, my hands roaming along her curves, kissing her hungrily.

“I’m sorry I shouted. It wasn’t aimed at you.”

“What was all that about?” She asks, concerned.

I try to find the words, but they don’t come. I can’t tell her like this.

Tucking a loose strand of her blonde hair behind her ear, I ask, “You wanna go somewhere? I’ve something I want to show you.”

“Oh yeah? Show me what?”

I take her hand in mine, kissing her knuckles. “You’ll see.”

Chapter Fifty-One

“IthoughtColton’stastein music was crap, but seriously, you have nothing on him. This is awful,” I tease, watching him pull onto the highway that connects us to the city. My fingertips tap the touchscreen on the dashboard to change the channel.

“Whatcha think you’re doing touching my radio? If you’ve got something against rock music, then you might have to walk home. That song was fucking awesome.”

“First off, that wasn’t rock music. That was someone screaming into a microphone with a deep voice,” I tease. “So deep you could barely make out the lyrics the guy was trying to sing. It was total gibberish.”

“That’s it. You’re walking,” he taunts with a gleam in his eye.

“You wouldn’t dare.”

“Alright then, let’s hear what you listen to in your car?”
