“Run,” Saint yells. “Fucking run, Lexy! Don’t stop until you get out safe.”

Terror fills me as I realize he might not make it out of this alive.

I can’t lose him like this.

I meet his gaze, tears streaming down my face. “I’m not fucking going anywhere without you.”

He fires several rounds off before crouching down for cover around the side of the stage.

“Angel, look at me. I’ll find you; I swear I’ll find you with everything that’s still good inside me. Now run.”

My mind battles with indecision.

“Lexy, c’mon, we need to go,” Jordin pleads, tugging my arm.

I look around the destruction, at the dead bodies littered around the room, then back to Saint. “Do you promise?”

“I promise, Angel.”

I nod twice, but as I’m about to flee, I spot the dead man’s gun next to me on the ground. On instinct, I pick it up, placing it in my pocket. I’ve never held a gun before in my life. All I know is from what I’ve seen on TV shows and movies. You point, and you shoot.

Saint and Caleb yell at us to go and that they’ll cover us before turning their attention back to the gunmen and returning fire.

“RUN,” Jordin shouts, gripping my hand tightly.

We sprint, bullets flying around us as the men engage in a firefight.

We reach the door and push hard on the handle, opening the exit. As soon as we step out of the room, we run as fast as we can, our hearts pumping adrenaline through our veins. Navigating through cold and dark rooms, we silently make our way through the castle until we reach a set of stone steps. My heart leaps as they lead us to an outside door, but it’s locked, with no sign of a key anywhere.

“What do we do now?” I whisper, my voice strained. “There’s no way out!”

Jordin looks around the room at a hurried pace. “Look, there’s a window over there. Maybe we can get it open enough to squeeze through.”

“Squeeze through? I’ll smash the fucking thing if it gets us out of here alive.”

I walk towards the window, gripping the ledge with both hands, but a sharp pain shoots through my side with every movement.

“You’re shaking. Let me do it,” Jordin says, taking over.

I don’t tell her I’m hurt. I can’t afford to make her panic even more than she is already. We need to stay focused on getting out.

The window opens easily, and my tight chest lightens with every breath of fresh air I inhale. Jordin goes first, and I follow, shutting my eyes and gritting my teeth as the pain deepens, making me feel lightheaded.

When my feet hit the grass, Jordin’s worried eyes assess me. “Are you okay?”

“I’m fine,” I lie, holding onto my side in an attempt to ease the pain. It doesn’t work.

We reach the other side of the castle, but the ongoing fight echoes in the distance.

“Let’s take this slow,” I whisper. “We’ll make a run for the forest, but there might be more men lurking around waiting to pick people off one by one as they flee. I’ll go first past those bushes up ahead, then give you a signal it’s all clear.”

“Got it,” she replies softly.

I crawl low, pushing past the pain until I reach the bushes. Suddenly, Jordin’s piercing scream shatters the air.

Oh no. They’ve got her.

“Thought you could get away from us, did you?” a dark voice yells angrily.
