Larry greets us at the gate when we reach the house, bringing me an overwhelming feeling of relief and comfort that I wasn’t expecting.

We all made it home.

After listening to Saint’s careful instructions, Larry secures the gate, rounding up the guards to fortify the grounds in case there’s another attack.

I don’t allow myself to think that it could be a possibility. My mind is too fuzzy as a sudden wave of exhaustion tugs at my eyelids, threatening to consume me. I’m so tired that I can barely keep my eyes open.

The pain intensifies when I let go of my side to unclick my seat belt. Ignoring the blood on my hands, I manage to stand from the car, but my knees buckle, and darkness closes my vision, swallowing me whole as everything fades to black.

Chapter Nine

Acommotionjoltsmeto a stop as I’m about to enter the house.

“Lexy!” Jordin’s panicked voice rushes out.

Fear prickles down my spine, and I quickly turn around the car’s side to find Lexy unconscious on the ground.

“Oh my god, Saint, there’s blood. She’s bleeding!” Jordin’s voice cries in panic just as Lexy’s mom comes bursting out of the house.

Rushing over, I shove Jordin out of the way with more force than I meant, almost knocking her to the ground to get to Lexy.

Dropping to my knees, I scan Lexy’s body to see where the blood is coming from.Fuck.How did I not notice?

When I open her jacket, I almost lose it. I turn her over, desperately praying for an exit wound. Thankfully, the bullet went straight through, but she’s lost a lot of blood. I’ve seen grown men pass out with a lot less.

I quickly scoop Lexy up in my arms with no time to waste. “We need to get her inside. Colton, get Julia on the phone now. Tell her to get here as fast as possible,” I order urgently.

“On it,” he quickly replies, pulling his phone from his pocket.

Ignoring Kelly’s panicked screams, I rush inside, carrying Lexy into her bedroom.

“You’re going to be okay, Angel. I’ve got you.”

“Saint. What are you doing?” Kelly cries, rushing into the room. “Shouldn’t we call for an ambulance?”

I ignore her and wait for Caleb to pull back the covers on the bed so I can gently lay her down, but Kelly tries to stop him.

“Caleb, stop. She needs medical attention. Call 911 now!” she commands.

“We can’t risk it, Kelly. If we call an ambulance, they will take her to hospital. They’ll involve the cops. They’ll know Lexy is connected to us and tie her to what happened tonight. We can’t risk it. It will put us all in jeopardy. As far as anyone is concerned, we were all here tonight. Got it?” Caleb responds forcefully.

“Kelly’s right, Caleb. Look at her. Lexy needs a doctor,” Jordin argues.

“If we do, then we all get arrested. Is that what you want?” he asks.

She whispers something about two men, but I don’t understand. I’m too focused on Lexy right now to care.

“Saint, please.” I take my eyes off Lexy momentarily to give Jordin a threatening look.I’m not fucking playing here. If she rings the cops, we’re all fucked.A tear slides down her dirt-stained cheek, but she quickly wipes it away.

“I’m sorry, babe. But we can’t risk it,” Caleb says in an attempt to calm her down.

“I don’t give a damn about what happens to us! My best friend needs medical attention now,” she exclaims.

“What the fuck do you think I’m doing, huh? This is how we help her,” I retort. This isn’t the time to argue when my girl could be fucking bleeding out.

“How is this helping her,” she argues. “She needs a fucking doctor!”

I apply pressure on Lexy’s side, instructing Kelly to quickly grab towels to stem the bleeding until Julia arrives. She doesn’t argue and rushes out of the room.
