Jordin is having none of it, grabbing my arm, her face red with anger, and her eyes puffy and swollen from crying. “Why aren’t you listening to me? Saint?”

“I am fucking listening!” I shout, ripping Lexy’s dress to reveal the full extent of her wound. I turn to Colton, “Where the fuck is Julia?”

“Who the hell is Julia?” Jordin shouts.

Feeling the control I’m holding onto just about to snap like a twig, I explode at Caleb. “Get her the fuck out of here and tell Julia to fucking hurry.” I don’t care that they see tears in my eyes. All I care about is Lexy and knowing she will be okay.

A scuffle ensues, followed by the sound of a hard slap.

“Get your hands off me, Caleb. I’m not going anywhere until I know she’s going to be okay,” Jordin yells. “You know what, fuck this, I’m calling them myself,” she cries, snatching the phone from Colton’s hand.

Reaching across the bed, I grab it out of her hands. “You don’t understand. We can’t take her to the hospital,” I yell.

“Why the hell not?”

“Because she could still be in danger. We don’t know who those men were or why they wanted us all dead. They could be watching the house and the hospitals for all we know. Not to mention, the first thing the hospital will do is call the cops. People are dead, Jordin. Murdered in cold blood. You’re a Maloti, and Lexy is a part of the Garo family. What do you think the cops will do, huh? Who’s going to protect you both if we’re all locked up? No one. Especially not the cops. They can’t protect her. Only I can.” My eyes narrow to dangerous slits. “And only I will,” I continue with unchallenging determination. “The cops already have my dad and god knows who else. I won’t allow you to put her at risk. If you can’t understand that, I suggest you get the fuck out.”

She takes a deep breath, finally allowing my words to absorb.

“Whoever is coming here better be good. If anything happens to my best friend, I’ll personally hold you responsible,” Jordin says, her determination matching my own, walking over to Lexy’s bedside to hold her hand as a loud knock sounds at the door.

Colton rushes to answer it, and I give out a sigh of relief when I hear Julia’s calm voice ask him what’s happened. Colton quickly fills her in as she enters the room, accompanied by a tall, curly-haired brunette.

She removes her coat, surveying the room.

“About fucking time,” I tell Julia.

“I got here as soon as I could,” she says, surveying the room.

“Who the fuck is this?” I demand, eyeing the five-foot-three curly-haired brunette who looks to be in her late forties.

Julia gives me a pointed look. “This is my nurse, Amanda. She’s here to assist. If you have a problem with that, you can take it up with me later,” she snaps, walking over to Lexy. Julia removes my hand from Lexy’s side to inspect the wound.

“How long has she been out?” Julia asks, rolling up her sleeves and applying alcohol gel to her hands, the smell overpowering, before putting on medical gloves.

“About a half hour.”

A look of concentration crosses her face as she examines Lexy’s wound.

Kelly’s face pales. “Is she going to be okay, doctor?”

“The bullet seems to have just caught her on her side,” Julia says, turning to me first, then to Kelly. “Which is good. She’s a fortunate girl, Mrs. Garo. A few more inches, and she might not have been so lucky.”

“I wouldn’t call getting shot lucky,” Jordin sneers, but Julia ignores her, continuing her examination of Lexy’s body.

Working for the mafia, Julia has seen all sorts. Men with bullet and stab wounds on every part of the body. Some die, some live. Julia saying Lexy’s lucky is music to my fucking ears.

“What can I do, doctor?” Kelly asks, her face as pale as a ghost.

Julia gives Amanda a list of equipment she needed from her medical bag before answering Kelly.

“I need you to clear the room and give me some space to work. All of you.”

“But I’m her mother. I can’t just leave her here alone.”

“Please, Mrs. Garo. This is my job. I know what I’m doing, and I assure you I won’t let anything happen to your daughter. She’s in good hands.”

I look at the tired and sad faces around the room, then clear my throat, “You all head out. I’ll call you once there’s news.”
