Page 2 of The Devil's Saint

It takes a split second for my brain to register what’s happening. My body tenses in shock.

“Saint?” I whisper, my voice barely audible over the thumping bass of the music. The lights above us shine in his blue eyes, making them seem impossibly lighter. He’s dressed in black jeans and a crisp white shirt with the sleeves rolled up, showing off his tattooed forearms, and I won’t lie, he looks utterly delicious.

My heart races in my chest, and my eyes widen to see his face contorted with anger and something else I can’t quite decipher when his gaze skims the length of my body.

As he continues to tug on my arm, the world around us fades away, the pulsating music and flashing lights becoming distant background noises.

“What are you doing here?” I manage to stammer, my surprise quickly giving way to a mixture of defiance and confusion.

I always knew in the back of my mind that he could be here at some point during the night. It’s all everyone at school’s been raving about for weeks, but to manhandle and embarrass me like this was not okay.

“Saint!” My pleas fall on deaf ears. “Saint, Stop!” I yell over the booming beat of the music, trying to drown me out.

His eyes bore into mine with fury. “Don’t say another fucking word, Lexy. I mean it. You’re in enough trouble as it is.”

Trouble with who? My mom’s away on her hen weekend. She doesn’t even know where I am.

He marches us toward an exit sign, giving security a quick nod as if he knew him before opening a back door and leading us into the open street. Dropping my arm, he squeezes my hand in his, showing me around a corner to a quiet alleyway, where I spot his Bugatti. The car comes to life when he pushes a button on the key fob.

Panic spirals inside me at the thought of Jordin being left alone with those guys hanging around. Digging in my heels, I stand my ground.

“I’m not leaving with you. You can bully me all you want, but I’m not going anywhere. Jordin is still in there. I won’t leave her on her own,” I fire with determination, trying to shove past him to go back inside. Still, he doesn’t relent, firmly touching my shoulder to stop me from going further.

His voice is brutal and uncaring. “She’s fine. Caleb’s got her.”

“Caleb?”

“Yeah. Who else did you think I came with?”

Oh, I don’t know. Georgina, Christy, Mabel? Someone from the swim team. Take your pick.

“I couldn’t give two shits who you came with. I care about my friend, and I’m not leaving her.”

Saint chuckles, pissing me off even further.

“She’s not staying either.”

What’s that supposed to mean?

Frowning, I cross my arms over my chest, where his gaze lingers.

“Explain.”

“Caleb’s taking her home as we speak. She’s fine. Trust me.”

“Trust you?” I scoff. “Is that some kind of a sick joke?”

“She’s in safe hands, Lexy. I promise.”

“Don’t you say that. Don’t make promises you can’t keep.”

“I always keep my promises to you.”

“The last time you made me a promise, something bad happened.”

“I remember. I said you would be safe on that boat. You were. I didn’t break my promise. And don’t try to change the subject. What the fuck were you thinking coming here tonight?” he yells, opening his car door.

People stare at us as they walk past, but I ignore them and continue to get my point across.
