“I don’t believe everything I hear. I believe what I see, and I watched it coming directly from the horse’s mouth.Your mouth.”

He takes a large step back, a mixture of confusion and panic crossing his features.

“You’re lying. Who told you that?”

I retrieved the copy of the tape recording from my pocket.

“You told me.”

He jumps back, startled when the gate behind him opens.

“Marcus!” He looks around, edging towards the fence’s edge, looking for help but finding none.

“There’s nowhere left to hide. No one to buy your protection. No hole to crawl into,” Caleb taunts.

“You were in business with him, weren’t you? This whole time you were selling women and children to rapists and pedophiles. What did you promise him, dad? That he’d get a new son to take over the family business. Did you promise him me? That I’d marry his granddaughter when the time came and follow his orders like a lapdog?”

“No…No, I…”

Striding towards him, my eyes turn down to dangerous slits. “Lexy was next on that list. Wasn’t she?”

“Lex..” I cut him off with a right hook to his jaw, then another into his stomach.

He falls to the ground, coughing out a mixture of blood and saliva and spitting out several teeth.

“You were planning to take away the woman I love and sell her to some pervert to rape her.” My heavy boot slams into his side repeatedly. “WEREN’T YOU?” I yell.

A satisfied smile crosses my face at the feel of his ribs cracking under my boot.

“So what if I was?” He’s coughing hard now. “She’s a whore like her mother. Only good for opening her legs.”

A rage unlike anything I’ve felt before explodes in my veins, and I lose it charging towards him, pounding my fists into his face, over and over again until Caleb pulls me back.

Caleb nods at the two guys, with Marcus lifting Eric to his feet. “It’s my turn.”

“This is for hurting the woman I love and killing her mother.” Caleb lands a hard blow to his chest; the sound of more ribs cracking mixes with his cries.

Eric laughs hoarsely, spitting out more blood. “Is that all you got, you pussy? I should have known you’d turn your back on me too, just like your rat bastard of a father.”

Caleb takes a step back, his face turning white with shock.

“That’s right. You heard me. Your father was a fucking rat. That couldn’t keep his big fat fucking mouth shut.”

“You’re a fucking lying piece of shit, Eric. My dad wasn’t a snitch,” Caleb yells.

“He turned tricks for the FEDS. He tried to give them everything, but I found him in Witness Protection first.”

“Your fucking lying. We were never in Witness Protection!”

Eric’s gaze swings from Caleb to me.

“You can’t trust him, son. He’ll do the same to you, just like his rat bastard father tried to do to me. He’s a fucking traitor.”

I shake my head, not believing him for a second. This is what he wants. To plant a seed of doubt, hoping it will spread like cancer.

“You’re wrong. My brother would never betray me.”

Caleb pulls out the same pen Eric used from his back pocket.
