“I’ve agreed not to take your miserable life.” The pen clicks. “But you always taught me an eye for an eye.” The silver frame glints in the sunlight. “Normally, I’d take both, but I want you to see and feel everything that’s coming to you before you leave this earth.”

Before Eric has the chance to say anything, Caleb stabs the pen into his left eye, gouging it from the socket. Blood splatters everywhere, running down his face.

Eric’s screams are blocked out with a dirty sock that was shoved into his mouth, courtesy of Marcus.

Caleb rubs his blood-soaked hands down Eric’s prison scrubs while Marcus spits at Eric’s feet and places a hand on my shoulder.

“Time for you two to go now before the guard shift changes. This isn’t your fight anymore. We agreed. My sister. My vengeance.”

Eric lifts his hanging head, barking out a hefty laugh.

“All this over pussy?”

“You either live by the rules or break them and die. You taught me that,” I shout, pointing at his bloodied face. “You betrayed your family and sold your soul to the devil. You did this. Now you die for it.”

Marcus bends, grabbing a fistful of Eric’s hair. “Want to know what kept me going all these years, Eric? I knew that one day, you and the sweet taste of revenge would always come. But don’t worry. You won’t be lonely in hell for long. Ian will be joining you very soon. I’m gonna make sure of it.”

Eric’s one eye is on me.

“Saint, don’t leave me here like this! You’re my son! My blood!”

My head shakes in disgust. “You’re weak and pathetic.”

“I’m your father, and you are my son.” He yells, hoping that will affect me somehow.

“After today, I will never think about you again. Your name will soon be forgotten. Caleb and I run the Garo empire now.”

Marcus lifts a baseball bat high over his head, and no matter how much he deserves it for all the lives that man has destroyed, I can’t watch.

Does that make me weak? I don’t care. As far as I’m concerned, the only family I have left is standing next to me, shoulder to shoulder. And with Lexy by my side, that’s all I’ll ever need.

A sickening crunch can be heard as the bat is swung over and over.

“You better remember to keep up your end of the bargain, Saint,” Marcus shouts after me. I keep on walking.

“This time tomorrow, Marcus, you’ll be on your way to becoming a free man.”

“You okay?” I asked Caleb, touching his shoulder as we loaded into the car.

As a kid, I was taught all soldiers abide by the rules regardless of rank or family merit. Violation of this forfeits life. Secrets and lies will always catch up with you.

Caleb stares straight ahead with a look I can’t decipher.

“What if he’s right, Saint? What if my father really was a rat?”

I lift up my shirt, revealing the family crest.

“Look at me,” I tell him, and he does. “You and I are the same. We all took the same oath and bleed from the same vein. What was said in there changes nothing for me. You’re my brother now and forever, dipshit.” I add to lighten the mood and ease his worries. “You’re stuck with me whether you like it or not.”

“So, what happens now? What do we tell Kelly and the others?”

My phone bleeps out a message, but I ignore it, firing up the engine and answering his question.

“We fill Colton in on everything tonight. We can worry about Kelly later.”
