‘It’s okay, I liked it.’

Eva moved away from me and tossed a bag of snacks my way. ‘Don’t let the door hit your ass on the way out, you weirdo.’

I caught it with a sigh and shut the door behind me as the icy wind attacked.

What now?

* * *

The bitter night froze me to the bone as I walked through the streets of the town. My teeth chattered as my stomach continued to rumble, the chips having barely touched my sides.

Hell, the mortal world was downright miserable without shelter.

Turning into an alleyway, I pressed my back up against the stone wall of the building, sheltering somewhat from the nipping wind.

‘Ready to come home yet?’

My brother appeared beside me, his smug face exasperating even in my circumstances.

‘No.’

‘Stop being so pig-headed. You’re going to kill yourself if you keep this up.’

Anteros threw out his godly aura, wrapping us both in a little pocket of blissful warmth that the rain couldn’t penetrate.

Resting my head back against the wall, I let my shoulders fall as I basked in his heat.

‘It’s harder than I thought it would be. They wanted remuneration for a simple drink. What am I supposed to do? Where do people sleep on a vacation? How do they eat?’ I’d been pampered my entire existence; it hadn’t at all prepared me for the human world.

‘Don’t tell Zeus I helped you out, but I can’t let you die from being such a fucking imbecile.’ One of my golden arrows materialised in Anteros’ hand. ‘Take this to that little store in the morning and they will swap it for money. You’ll be able to use that for lodgings and food.’

‘Why would they want my arrow?’ I took it from him, along with a cloth bag, which he’d placed it in.

‘Because it’s made of gold. Mortals adore it.’

‘That helps me come morning, but what if I freeze before it arrives?’ I asked.

‘There’s a diner at the end of the street that stays open the entire night. You can get something to eat and a hot drink there. I really think you should just come home, though. Zeus will give you back your wings. He will laugh at you a bit, but you’ll live.’

‘No. I’m staying. I want to know more about the humans and what spurs them onward. Will this diner take a golden arrow?’

‘No, but I swiped some cash off two drunken idiots who were fighting. Here.’ Anteros pressed some of the crinkled notes into my hand.

‘Thank you. Don’t tell anyone back home. And stop spying on me.’

‘Why? Worried that I’ll see you make an ass of yourself in front of the mortal who had you cleaning for her with barely a glance?’

My jaw tensed, and I narrowed my eyes. ‘I’m serious. I don’t need you here spying on me.’

‘Just looking out for you!’ he said, his laughter ringing out as he disappeared, his warmth vanishing and leaving me shivering in the bitter cold once more.

EVA

‘Shit.’

Declined.
